Funeral Services for William L. Yancey, Jr. , 87 of Rayville, LA, will be 2 PM Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Rayville United Methodist Church, Rayville, LA, with Rev. John Robert Black officiating, burial to follow in Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, Monroe, LA under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Rayville, LA, visitation will be from 1 pm until service time at the church.
L. Yancey as he was known by the entire community, died Saturday January 30, 2010 at Richardson Medical Center. He was born on May 29, 1922 and lived in Jonesville, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents William L. Yancey, Sr. and Grace Denham Yancey. He attended college at USL in Lafayette for 1 year and finished pharmacy school at Loyola University in New Orleans. After graduating he attended Officers Candidate
School at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He then served in the U.S. Navy aboard The USS Dauphin APA 97 attack transport in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Following this he moving to Rayville, LA in 1946. He owned Yanceys’ Pharmacy until his retirement. L. was a member of Rayville United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for 42 years, Singing in the choir was one of the joys of his life. He served the church
on the Administrative Board and the Finance Committee. He served for many years on the Board of Directors at Richland State Bank, he was a member of the fifth District Pharmaceutical Association and the Louisiana Pharmacists Association. He was a member of the VFW, a 59 year member of R.F. McGuire Lodge # 209, a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason and a noble of Barak Shrine Monroe, LA
He is survived by his wife Beverly Hatchell Yancey, sons, Langston Yancey and his wife Maggie Yancey and Read Yancey, daughter, Martha Ellen Cox and her husband Steven Cox, brother, Edwin Yancey and wife Betsy Yancey, five granddaughters, Katie Yancey, Erin Yancey, Taylor Yancey, Yancey Cox and Macy Cox. He’s also survived by Crease Harry, family friend of many years. The family wishes to express their gratitude to caretakers Delbara White, Deanna Hubbard and Donna Parker for their care and concern over the past year.
Pallbearers will be Owen Rigby, Hollis Venable, Bobby Calvert, Vic Jordan, Fred Scott Franklin and Walter Pierron.
Honorary Pallbearers are Walter Cochran and Dr. Gordon Massengale,
The family would like to extend thanks to the staff of Richardson Medical Center for their attentive care during his brief stay.
