Lt. Col. William James (Gerry) Marchbank III (Ret.)

Lt. Col. William James (Gerry) Marchbank III (Ret.), 74, was able to return to Heaven, Thursday, July 19, 2012 after a decade-long battle with congestive heart failure resulting from diabetes.
He was born December 15, 1937, to William J. (Bill) and Ruth Jenkins Marchbank in Denver, CO. They lived in Santa Fe, NM, until his mother’s death in 1944. He graduated from Wichita Falls High School in Wichita Falls, TX. Afterward, he attended college, playing football at the University of Oklahoma, and then transferred to Northeast Louisiana University (NLU) to be the starting center for the NLU football team. While at NLU, he was President of the Student Body, a member of the TKE fraternity, and met his wife of 51 years, Camille Etier Marchbank.
After graduating from NLU, he spent 26 years in the U.S. Army, in both active and reserve duty. He served in Vietnam with the 1/40th B Battery Field Artillery Unit out of Fort Sill, OK. During his adult life, he taught high school in Caldwell Parish, worked as the Director of Campus Security at NLU, while obtaining his Master’s Degree, was the Director at North Delta Regional Planning & Development, was a life insurance agent for the Equitable, and returned to his first love, teaching, at Riverfield Academy. He was always active in the Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school at Memorial Methodist and First United Methodist Churches in Monroe, as a member of the Pastoral Parish Relations Board, and for the last twenty plus years at the Mangham United Methodist Church. Even though he did other things, he was always teaching; whether it was teaching math to all the neighborhood kids, Sunday school, or life lessons to his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Jenkins and William J. (Bill) Marchbank, and his father-in-law, Johnnie C. Etier.
He is survived by his wife, Camille Etier Marchbank of Mangham, LA; son and daughter-in-law, William J. IV (Bill) and Janice Marchbank of The Woodlands, TX; son and daughter-in-law, Johnnie and Laura Marchbank of Monroe, LA; daughter, Lynn Marchbank of Tulsa, OK; and grandchildren, Carter Marchbank of DeRidder, LA; Blake and Sarah Marchbank of Monroe, LA; and Savannah and Avery Marchbank of Tulsa, OK. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Lorraine H. Etier of Mangham, LA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tim and Kathryn Etier Fife of Mangham, LA; nephew Timothy Fife and his wife, Jackie of Baton Rouge, LA ; nephew Jonathon Fife and his wife Le, and great niece Ella of Rayville, LA.
Pallbearers will be Carter Marchbank, Blake Marchbank, Avery Marchbank, Timothy Fife, Jonathon Fife, and Larry Snell. Honorary pallbearers will be 1/40th Vietnam B Battery Field Artillery Unit.
Visitation with his family will be 6-8 PM Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Rayville.
The celebration of his life will be 2 PM Sunday, July 22, 2012 at Mulhearn Funeral Home Chapel in Rayville, with graveside service immediately following in the Gwin Cemetery, Mangham, LA with
Rev. Brian Mercer and Rev. Eddie Ryhmes officiating, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home-Rayville, LA.
