Graveside services for Virginia Kenley Durrett, 88, will be at 2:00 PM., Saturday, October 26, 2019, at Riverview Cemetery in Monroe, LA, with The Rev. Bill Echols officiating, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe. Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 1:30 PM, Saturday, at the funeral home.
She was born in Marion, LA to parents, Herman and Mattie Lou Kenley, and passed on Sunday, October 20, 2019. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Joe G. Durrett, Jr.; and her brother, Billy Kenley. She is survived by three children, Ginger Durrett, of Cumming, GA, Dorothy Durrett of Lake Charles LA, and Joe G. Durrett, III of Tallahassee, FL; grandchildren, Andy and Matthew Aucoin, Wayne and Chris Durrett, and Michelle Romero; great-grandchildren, Drew, Thomas, and Parker Aucoin, Amelia Aucoin, and Andrew Wayne Durrett.
Following graduation from Ouachita Parish High School, she obtained an Associate degree from Northeast Louisiana Junior College. Afterwards, she received a Bachelors in elementary education and an MBA in finance and marketing, from Northeast Louisiana State College. She also completed two years of work towards a PhD in finance and marketing from LSU. In 1969, she joined the faculty at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, where she taught general business, marketing, and finance for thirty years. Following retirement from McNeese, she taught general business at SOWELA Community and Technical college in Lake Charles for several years.
She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, working in her yard, and was an accomplished chef. She was a voracious reader and maintained an avid interest in local, state and national politics.
