Virginia Huff Fortenberry peacefully passed away on Friday April 19, 2024 just a couple of hours before her 90th birthday. She was born on April 20, 1934, in Winnsboro, LA, to the late Walter B. Huff and Annie Lewis Huff. She was married to the late Phil E. Fortenberry, Jr. and had two sons, Phil B. Fortenberry and the late Shane E. Fortenberry.
Before moving to Hattiesburg, Ms. in 2007, Virginia lived in Belle Chasse, La. for many years. She retired from the Plaquemines Parish School Board as a “lunch lady” at the Belle Chasse Elementary School. She was known for putting star stickers on her hair to the delight of the children. She loved reading books, sewing, quilting and collecting sailboats. Most of all she loved being with her family. Affectionately known as “Mammaw”, she spent many days at her grandson’s baseball games, sitting in her lawn chair, wearing her visor and G.I. Joe sunshades as she kept a meticulous scorecard right down to balls and strikes. She also loved going to dance reviews and soccer games to watch her great granddaughters.
Virginia loved the Lord and prayed everyday for her family. She often said, “Take Him with you everywhere you go. You won’t be disappointed.” She is survived by her son Phil “Robin” (Regina) , her brother Walter Earl Huff (Sherry) of West Monroe, La., her sister Terri Huff Sharp of Winnsboro, La. Grandchildren - Jason, Luke (Julie),Jessica, Michael (Brittany), Ryan (Breanna), Shayna, and Katie. Great Grandchildren - Haven, Brea, Lyla, Willa, Eva, Bryleigh, Alyssa, Michael Jr., Connor and Avaleigh.
Her family expresses their gratitude for the kindness and loving care to the staff at the Bedford Care Center of Petal, Ms. and the staff of Homecare Hospice.
Virginia will be laid to rest next to her husband Phil at Gwin Cemetery, a small country place next to the town water tower and baseball fields in Mangham, La.
Hulett Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg, Ms. and Mulhearn Funeral Home in Winnsboro, La. are in charge of arrangements.
