Services for Mrs. Virginia Brown Marx, 86, of Monroe, LA, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, homemaker and former school teacher with the Monroe City Schools, will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, January 26, 2009, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe . Visitation with the family will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Conducting funeral services will be Bishop William C. Johnston, assisted by Dixon Abell.
A convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mrs. Marx received Baptism and Confirmation on August 24, 1969. On August 31, 1990, she received her endowments at the LDS Temple in Dallas, and has received a Temple Recommend every year since this date. Working diligently in many LDS church callings, she served as a visiting teacher, Relief Society teacher, and as a teacher in the Primary Organization. She was the Primary President in 1973. On September 28, 1794, she received her Patriarchal Blessing from the late Patriarch James L. Womack in Winnfield. In 1976, she was a member of the building committee for the LDS church which was built on North 33rd Street in Monroe.
Mrs. Marx is survived by her husband of forty-seven years, Gilbert M. Marx, a devoted husband, stepfather of two children and step-grandfather of their four grandchildren and a great grandson. They include daughter Sage Redding Veach and her husband Wallace Veach, of Baton Rouge, son Dr. Paschal Redding III, of Birmingham, AL, grandson Matthew Marston Lane of Baton Rouge, granddaughter Leslie Redding Parrish and husband Joshua of Nashville, TN, grandson Grant Redding of Birmingham, AL, and granddaughter Virginia Veach Johnston, husband Kyle, and their son, Milo, of Palo Alto, CA, a sister Mary Esther Brown Scheps of Lafayette, and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her mother, Abbie Louise Marston Brown, father Edward Jewette Brown, sister Louise Brown Morris, and brother Dr. Edward Jewette Brown.
Pallbearers will be nephews of Mrs. Marx: Mr. Edward B. Scheps of Lafayette, Dr. Phillip B. Scheps of Houston, TX, Michael Brown, Thomas Brown of Nashville, TN,Douglas Brown of Marshall, TX, and Grant Redding of Birmingham, AL.
She was an enthusiastic elementary teacher who loved teaching and taught second grade at Sherrouse Elementary, Sallie Humble and Carver Elementary. Her teaching career with the Monroe City Schools held a special joy during the years she claimed her mother, Mrs. Louse M. Brown as a co-worker. Mrs. Marx gave all her energies to her students as a creative and devoted teacher both in the public school, in her church’s Primary, and later loved being a volunteer classroom reader in the Monroe City Schools. She and husband Gilbert Marx also started numerous Junior American Citizens groups for young patriots as part of her volunteer work in schools with the Daughters of the American Revolution. She belonged to the Fort Miro Chapter of the DAR. She was also a member of the Sir John Payne Chapter Louisiana Society Colonial Dames of the XVII Century. Mrs. Marx received both a Bachelor of Arts in Education and a Master of Arts in Education at Northeast Louisiana University. She was devoted to study of the Bible and scriptures and was sustained by the sacred writings and prayer every day of her life.
