Virginia Anita Vaughan Miles

July 6, 1924 — April 25, 2021

Virginia “Ginger” Anita Vaughan Miles departed this life on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at the age of 96. Visitation will be held from 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Monday, May 3 at Mulhearn Funeral Home on Sterlington Road in Monroe. A graveside service and burial will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Riverview Cemetery in Monroe with the Reverend John Mabray officiating. Visitation and graveside service will be held in conjunction with those of Ginger’s beloved sister, Juanita Vaughan Ash, who passed away just days prior to Ginger.
Ginger was born July 6, 1924 in Watertown, Florida. At age 16, she moved with her family to Monroe, Louisiana where she attended Neville High School. She went on to attend Northeast Junior College (now ULM) in Monroe where she was elected Homecoming Queen. In December of 1944, she was married to Lieutenant Oscar Landon Miles, III at Saint John’s Episcopal Church at Lafayette Square in Washington, D.C. Shortly thereafter, the newlywed couple traveled to Portland, Oregon for the commissioning of Landon’s new ship and then to San Diego where Landon sailed his ship for Okinawa to serve in WWII.
After the war they started a family and lived in several cities throughout the U.S. before coming home to Monroe in 1960. Ginger was a dedicated and supportive wife and a loving mother. She loved to tap dance and traveled to perform in her dance school reunion in Florida when she was in her 50’s. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines choral group in Monroe and enjoyed playing the organ. Ginger and Landon enjoyed travels across the globe and loved to entertain, frequently hosting gatherings for family and friends.
Ginger is preceded in death by her husband Oscar Landon Miles, III, daughter Margaret Ann Miles McInnis, son Michael Landon Miles, parents Howard Lawson Vaughan and Edna White Vaughan, and sister Juanita Vaughan Ash. She is survived by her grandchildren Jenny Rebecca Barnes Stacey (George) of Gadsden, AL, and Landon Price Barnes (Christie) of Nashville, TN; son-in-law, Michael Parker McInnis of Monroe; daughter-in-law Mary Miles Marx of Monroe; great-grandchildren Mae Virginia Stacey, Barnes Carroll Stacey, Margaret Miles Stacey, Felix Garvey Barnes, and Quincy Briggs Barnes; and nephew Stephen Vaughan Ash (Jean).
Pallbearers are Price Barnes, Johnny Bryant, Billy Haddad, Jim Lockhart, Steve Swander and Clyde White. Memorials may be made to the LA Baptist Children’s Home in Monroe, LA, or the charity of your choice.
The family wishes to thank special caregivers Joyce Young, Joyce Reed, Janice Blankenship, Josie Blankenship, Kathy Griffin and Debra Kay Criss who provided many months of around-the-clock assistance, compassion, and love for Mrs. Miles. The family also thanks the administration and staff of Azalea Estates for providing care during the time of her residence there.
