Vettye Louise Branton Garrett

Vettye Louise Branton Garrett found peace and comfort on Monday, February 22, 2021 after living with the effects of Scleroderma for almost 40 years. She was born on November 2, 1948, and although she was born one day shy of All Saints Day, we will always celebrate her for the saint that she was. She grew up in Haynesville, Louisiana, where she met and married her husband of nearly 53 years, Larry "Snuff" Garrett. She attended Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where she earned both bachelor and master of science degrees. She began her teaching career as a typing instructor at Louisiana Technical College in Bastrop, Louisiana, and retired over 30 years later as the director. She was devoted to her job, colleagues, and students despite the many health obstacles she faced.

She balanced her devotion to her career with her love of shopping (mail order, catalogue, QVC, HSN, Amazon Prime, etc.); meticulously organizing, decorating and rearranging her home; cooking and baking; and doting on her beloved pets (Cookie, Snookie, Snuffie, Bo, Pepper, Jojo, Prissy, Puddin, Fanny, Sneaky, and Patty Cake).

The roles she valued most in life were those of wife, mother, and grandmother. Her love and tolerance of Larry was unparalleled. She faithfully listened to the same stories and jokes, laughing at the same punchline every time. They traveled often throughout their marriage, returning to Las Vegas and California several times. She especially loved the music of Delbert McClinton, and they traveled to see his concerts whenever he was near. She has been to heaven once before on the special occasion when she met Delbert backstage.

She was a devoted mother to her only child, Patrick Garrett, whom she adored, nurtured, and guided. She raised him to know how to wash, fold, and iron his own laundry, cook his own meals, and pick up after himself (for which her daughter-in-law, Kaycee, is forever grateful). She also taught him how to love and overcome adversity.

But it was her role as grandmother for which she was destined. She embraced being Gan Gan to Caroline and Amelie with her whole heart. She would dedicate weeks during the year to spend with them getting pedicures, shopping online, watching Reba, baking cookies, going to movies, and having lazy days in their PJs. She never missed a special event in their lives and made sure they knew how much they were loved.

She will be missed by her friends and family for her infectious smile and laugh, her capacity to love, and her indomitable spirit. Visitation will be Friday, February 26, 2021 from the hours of 2 to 4 PM and service following at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Hwy 165, Monroe, Louisiana.
