Vernon L. WhitlockFuneral services for Vernon L. Whitlock, 87, of West Monroe, formerly of Monroe, will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe with Dr. Craig West and Dr. Alan Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe.A personal letter to my family and friends. I am writing this myself ahead of time because I want it done right. I have had a good life. I have never said I wished I had done so and so, I have no regrets about anything. I suppose now you are having my funeral. I want you to have a good time. You have heard it said, when a child is born we are to weep, when a child of God goes home we are to rejoice.Well, I am home now. I am not at the funeral, I am gone.Let me reminisce a bit, I was born into a home of God fearing parents, Jesse and Evia Whitlock, raised in the way of the Lord. I gave my heart to the Lord at the age of 13 years.Later in life, I met my sweetheart, Margie Wells. As of now we have been married 64 years. We had 2 sons, Jim and David. Later on Jim married Chris, David married Diann. Then we had 3 grandchildren. Doug, Eric and wife Amanda, Karen and husband Will Hood. Then came our 4 great-grandchildren that we are proud of. They are Allison and Andrew Whitlock, Abigail and Sydney Hood. I think that they are cuter and smarter than anyone. All grandparents feel that way. I was blessed with one sister, Joe Ann and her husband Sam Brinson.I love my family, church and my profession. I had a Barber Shop in front of NLU for 38 years. When a person came in, it was just a friend coming to visit. I never was one to brag, but I was the best joke teller that I ever heard. It is a sad time when someone dies but I am more alive than ever. I will be looking for all of you. What a great time we are going to have.I want to thank all of you for coming today and especially thank my pall-bearers for serving. Pallbearers will be Glen Rountree, Dr. Brad Johnson, Jack Walker, Mike Hartt, Jimmy James and David Johnston. Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Whitlock, Will Hood, Lonnie Bayles, Matt Parker, Ben Bradford, Doug Whitlock and the Deacons of First Baptist Church, Monroe, LA.Also, a great big thanks for all who had a part in this wonderful service.Visitation will be from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM Thursday at the Funeral Home.Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Monroe.Bye for now, Vernon
