Thomas Nicolas Poulos

Funeral services for Thomas Nickolas (Tommy) Poulos, who served his nation and home area as a naval officer, architect and builder, will be held at Mulhearn Funeral Home at 10:00AM Thursday, June 26, 2014 with Father Eudokimos officiating. Burial will be in the New Winnsboro Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home-Winnsboro.
   Mr. Poulos was born in Galveston, TX on August 4, 1924 and died after a long illness on June 22, 2014. He attended elementary school in Ruston and graduated from Winnsboro High School in 1940 at the age of 16. He entered Tulane University and graduated from the School of Architecture in February of 1944. He later received a master’s degree in architecture from Tulane in 2004.
  He received Naval ROTC training at Tulane and after graduation he was commissioned as a US Navy officer at age 19. Following further training at bases in Asbury Park, NJ and Chicago, IL he was assigned to a naval fuel tanker, the USS Armadillo, in the Pacific and served off Okinawa during heavy kamikaze attacks in the spring of 1945. He earned the rank of lieutenant junior grade and received three citations from the Navy, the Asiatic Pacific Ribbon, the Victory Ribbon, and the American AIREA Ribbon.
   After receiving an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, Mr. Poulos returned home to Franklin Parish and accepted a job with J. A. Harper Construction Company based in Crowville. He remained with the company for the rest of his carrer, becoming a partner with Mr. Harper in 1985. He worked on numerous major construction and road projects with the company, including courthouses in Winnsboro and Rayville, the Ouachita Parish Library and Ouachita High School in Monroe and LA State Penitentiary Hospital at Angola. One of his later projects with the company was the repaving of Highway 15 through Winnsboro.
   He was a longtime member of the Winter Quarters Hunting and Fishing Club in Tensas Parish which presented him with a plaque in honor of his long service as treasurer.
   Mr. Poulos was a loyal member and financial supporter of Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Monroe. He was also generous supporter of St. Jude Research Hospital and many other charites. He was also generous with his family and friends and in all respects a good, kind, generous Christian man.
   He is survived by two sisters-Caliope Poulos of Winnsboro, his chief caregiver and Nike Poulos Anderson and husband Bob of Monroe; sister-in-law-Janice Poulos of Crowville; nephews-Frank Poulos and wife Amy of Crowville, Nick Poulos of Crowville, Nick Anderson and wife Cheree of Monroe, Tom Anderson and wife Nacky of Huntington, WV; niece-Emily LaFrance and husband Billy of Georgetown, TX; and numerous cousins and great Nieces and nephews.
   He is preceded in death by his parents-Nicolas Pete and Emily Limneou Poulos; brother-Frank Poulos; and a sister Katherine Funderburk and a great niece-Kathy LaFrance Merritt.
 
   Pallbearers will be his nephews-Nick Poulos, Frank Poulos, Nick Anderson, Tom Anderson, and great nephews Andrew Anderson and James Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Sparks, Lloyd Moreau, and Ed Jones.
   The Poulos family would like to express their gratitude to Plantation Manor Nursing Center and its employees for their loving care of Tommy as well as to longtime housekeeper, Zettie Robinson for her long service and for care given by sitters-Lori Maxwell. Lou Myers, Windy Yeats, Debbie Parker, Connie Beasley, and Martha Yeats.
   Visitation will be 5-8:00PM Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at the Mulhearn Funeral Home. A Trisagion Service will be held at 6:00PM in the chapel.
