Memorial Services for Thomas B. Godfrey, Jr, 81, of Monroe will be held at 2:30PM Tuesday, December 20, 2016 at St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA, with Dr. Tim Neustifter officiating. Interment will be held at St. Pauls United Methodist Church Columbarium.
Thomas Brewer Godfrey, Jr., of Monroe died peacefully at home, surrounded by his loving family on December 17, 2016. He was born on November 20th, 1935 in Winnsboro, LA to June Hodge and Thomas Brewer Godfrey, Sr.
He attended Georgia Tucker School, Neville High School, and graduated from Baylor School in Chattanooga, TN in 1953. Upon graduating from high school, Tommy attended Tulane University and completed his Bachelor of Science degree at Northeast Louisiana State College in 1957 where he was a member of The National Society of Scabbard and Blade and Omicron Delta Kappa.
He entered the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1957 and served at Fort Sill, OK and Fort Bragg, NC where he was in the 18th Airborne Corps Artillery. He was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant in 1959.
Upon returning to Monroe, Tommy became President of Monroe 66 Oil Co. until his retirement in 1987. Tommy was Past Master of Western Star Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason, and a Shriner. He was Alumni Fund Chairman of NLU Alumni Association, a member of the Monroe Rotary Club, and a founding member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where he served as a board member. In addition he was one of the founders of River Oaks School, and led efforts to construct the Harry Bell Memorial Gymnasium.
Tommy is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia Reitzell Godfrey, three children, Katharine Godfrey Morgan (Scooter), Thomas Blake Godfrey, and Lynn Godfrey Sharp (Greg), his grandchildren, Curry Bagwell (Sarah), Jennifer Hoychick (Tim), Christopher Bagwell, Anna Caroline and Elizabeth Strickland, Katherine Godfrey, and great grandchildren, Christian and Addie Bagwell, Lily, Emme, and Ellie Hoychick.
He is also survived by his brother Dr. James H. Godfrey, his wife Laura, and their three children as well as his many cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hill Hinkle and his nurse Leighnea, Dr. Charles Morgan and Carolynn, and his loving caregivers Shannon Newton, Chester King, G PERSON, Anna Rose Broussard, and Shelia Mims.
Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Mike Cage, Charles Hamker, Robert Cudd, Joe Ledoux, Ryan Sartor, Troy Watters, Gary Booth, Rusty Lanier, George Dean, Ralph King, Dr. Ray Rhymes, Ken Abington, Bubba Rhymes, Phillip Watson, William Watson, and Dr. Larry Baker.
Visitation will be held from 1:00p.m. until the time of the memorial service at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on December 20, 2016.
