Memorial Services for Stephen J. Sutherland, 63, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, March 6, 2021, at Grace Episcopal Church with Reverend Don Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Grace Episcopal Church under direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home Monroe. Steve was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Lions Club, Kappa Sigma Fraternity, Monroe Rotary, Strauss Theatre, and Grace Choir. Steve was born and raised in Arkansas. He grew up farming with his parents. He was driving tractors by the time he was 8 years old. He was an avid tennis player in High school and involved in many school organizations including 4H, FBLA, Science Club, Who’s Who, Beta Club, Student Council, and yearbook. He enjoyed water skiing, swimming, and diving at the lake. Steve met his future wife, Sallie Ann Carter in the tenth grade on a blind date. They attended NLU (ULM) where he was a member of Kappa Sigma, Pi Sigma Epsilon, Yearbook, Ski team, and Interfraternity Council. Steve’s proudest accomplishment include his marriage of 42 years and his family. He was an over-achiever and worked hard to be the best in business and relationships. He and Sallie married the day after graduating from college and he farmed with his parent in Concordia Parish over 1,500 acres. He left the country life to enter the car business in Alexandria. He later owned and operated The Honda Store in Monroe. He returned to school and earned his MBA which led to him becoming a business professor. Steve was vivacious, outgoing, and full of life. He was high spirited and the life of the party and never met a stranger. He was most often described as a “Character.” Steve was born with one kidney and ended his life with no kidneys. He struggled with health issues for years. He was fortunate to have a kidney and pancreas transplant in 2015. The pancreas transplant worked. Steve wanted to be an organ donor himself but developed kidney cancer from anti-rejection drugs in 2019 and was unable to donate any of his organs. The family encourages everyone to become an organ donor. Survivors include his wife, Sallie Carter Sutherland; Sons, Justin and wife Bethany, Bailey, and wife Kelsey; Grandchildren, Lucretia Freeman, Shannan, and Jacob Sutherland; Mother-in-law, Johnnie Carter. Visitation will be 1:30 Until Service time Saturday, at Grace Episcopal Church. Pallbearers will be John Adams, Nate Colvin, Thomas Hayward, Joshua Taylor, and Michael Waller. Memorials may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
