Funeral services for ST Howell, 89, of West Monroe, LA, will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Lakeshore Baptist Church with Rev. William Smith officiating. Private family interment will follow, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe.
Mr. Howell died Sunday, December 18, 2016. He was a member of Lakeshore Baptist Church. He was born and raised in Winnsboro, LA, attended Winnsboro Elementary High School for ten years, graduating his senior year at Wisner High School. He graduated from the Northeast State College of LSU, received his Bachelor’s Degree from Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Master’s Degree from LSU in Baton Rouge, and pursued Doctorial Studies at Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.
Mr. Howell served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He worked as the assistant sports editor on the Clarion-Ledger Newspaper in Jackson, MS; also in the advertising department of The Sanders Industries in Jackson, MS. He also worked in the Personnel Office of Shell Oil Company in Lake Charles and Lafayette, LA. After teaching School in Texas and Lake Charles, he came to Monroe in 1960 as Guidance Counselor at Ouachita Parish High School. He was named Principal of Ouachita High School in 1963 and served for 14 years (1977). Then he became Superintendent of the Ouachita Parish School System, in which he served for 8 years, retiring in 1985. In retirement he has worked with the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association on the local and state levels. His family (especially his two grandsons) and his church have been the joy of his life in retirement.
Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Semmie Howell; brothers, Garland and AJ Howell; sisters, Dorothy Moore and Pearl Rome; and infant brother, Ralph Howell.
Survivors include wife, Ernestine Hammett Howell; son, Steve and wife Sandra and their son Tyler; daughter, Sharon and husband Richard Rawles and their son, Alan; and sister, Edith Howell.
Pallbearers will be Tyler Howell, Randy Hammett, David Hammett, Matthew Smith, Don Nugent, Rev. Kenny Herring, Matthew Herring, and Robert Williamson. Honorary pallbearers will be Warren Hix Landrum, and the deacons of Lakeshore Baptist Church.
Visitation will be 1:00 PM until service time Wednesday at the church.
