Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Kate “Mimi” Morrison Chisholm, 96, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 1, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Ricky Willis officiating. Interment will follow at Hasley Cemetery. Mrs. Chisholm was born in Van Buren, AR on September 6, 1910 to the late Albert G. and Edna Clay Morrison of West Monroe, LA., and died in West Monroe, LA on August 28, 2007. Mrs. Chisholm had a sister, the late Alberta Clay Morrison Spivey of Benton, AR. She graduated in 1928, from Van Buren High School and advanced to specialized training in speech and theater.
Sarah Kate married Charles P. Chisholm on April 27, 1930 and had twin daughters, Charlene Patricia (died at birth) and Charlotte Jo. She moved to West Monroe in 1934 and soon became a member of the First United Methodist Church and began teaching children’s Sunday school, and progressed on to teach adults' Sunday school for a total of 60 years of teaching.
Mrs. Chisholm was very active in the community and at Landmark until her hip fracture in December 2005. She was pivotal in church leadership and the United Methodist Women, where she had a circle named for her. She helped organize the Monroe Republican Women Organization in the 1960’s. She was also active in DAR, Little Theater and the American Mother’s Organization who helped establish the chapel at LA State Capitol. Mrs. Chisholm was very active in the Gideon’s International with her husband Charlie and was a founding member of the Bobashelas Book Club. She was a charter member of Glenwood Hospital Auxiliary, where she and her husband donated the chapel. Mrs. Chisholm devoted considerable time and energy to the West Monroe Boys Club. She organized her granddaughter's Jr. Music Guild, taught private speech and recitation lessons and was a popular story teller with her calendar consistently being devoted during the holiday season. She was always giving back her time and talents to her church, family and community.
Survivors include her beloved daughter, Charlotte Jo Chisholm Adams of West Monroe, LA; three loving grandchildren who cared for her during the last decade, Vicki Jo Adams Cansler and husband Larry of South Pittsburg, TN, Kendy Sue Adams Fletcher and husband Chad of Lake Dallas, Texas, and Charles Monroe “Chuck” Adams of West Monroe, LA; six great grandchildren, Camilea Brooke Cansler of West Palm Beach, FL, Clayton Hines Cansler of Knoxville, TN, Brenton Karl Baranek, United States Marine Corp, and wife Tanisha of San Diego, CA, Scott Nicholas Baranek, United States Army, and wife Melissa of Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX, Ashton Kate Adams of West Monroe, LA, and Caroline Elizabeth Adams of West Monroe, LA; one nephew, Gordon Spivey and wife Janet of Benton, AR; one niece, Beverly Karnes of Houston, TX.
Pallbearers will be Clayton Cansler, Larry Cansler, Brenton Barnek, Scott Baranek, Chad Fletcher, Mickey Cook, Todd Weaver, and Steve Taylor.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Fellowship Class at First United Methodist Church, the staff of Landmark Nursing Home, the staff of Hospice Care of Louisiana and the members of the Bobashelas Book Club.
Visitation will be 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. Friday, August 31, 2007 at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA.
Memorials can be made to the First United Methodist Church of West Monroe, LA or to the West Monroe Boys Club.
