Salvador Michael Maggio
May 14, 1953 – June 14, 2024
“Mike” Maggio 71, of West Monroe, Louisiana, passed away June 14, 2024. He was born in Lake Providence, LA, to Angelina (Angie) and Salvador A. (Sammy) Maggio on May 14, 1953. He attended St. Patrick Catholic School until 1968 when his family moved to Monroe, La. He was a graduate of Wossman High School in 1971 where he developed several lifelong friendships. His desire for knowledge never ceased and he continued his pursuit by taking courses at Louisiana Tech in 2000 inspired by his son, Matt, who was pursuing his Engineering degree during that time.
Mike’s work ethic was evident as early as age 16 with his first job at McDonald’s which quickly became a managerial position before he graduated high school. He managed several restaurants in Monroe and in 1990’s, he opened his first electrical subcontracting company. He later worked as an Electrician / Instrument Tech at Bancroft Bag and Graphic Packaging. His years working in the industry expanded his knowledge of all things electrical and mechanical while making lifelong friendships. Not one to sit idle, after retirement in 2016, he continued working with Premiere Drive Specialists periodically on special projects where his meticulous attention to detail was greatly appreciated.
Mike was a devout Catholic and attended St. Paschal’s Catholic Church for most of his adult life. He shared his many talents for cooking, volunteering, participating in and organizing so many events for the church community.
His building skills and love for woodworking can be seen in many areas of the sanctuary and church support spaces and the KC Hall. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. During his time with the Knights, he held numerous positions including Grand Knight of Local Council 3642, District Deputy of the State Council and Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree assembly 2077.
Mike was a ‘fixer’ at heart. He took pride in restoring family heirlooms to their original glory including a peanut parcher, gum ball machines, and a motion picture projector from his Piro Family legacy (Mangham, La). When you came to visit his home, he would offer you a ‘dime coke’ from the vintage Coca-Cola machine where you could sit and enjoy it in his grandfather's barber chair on display in his living room - his tribute to the Maggio heritage.
If you knew Mike, you know he loved his cars. He was a member of the Twin Cities Classic Cars Club. You may have even seen him riding the streets in December in his Red ‘48 Oldsmobile pulled by two tiny reindeer. Mike was a devoted father and grandfather who shared his love for fixing things and cooking with his family. If you were lucky enough to be at the Corner Coffee House in West Monroe when he shared his latest culinary treats you knew his talents in the kitchen. From homemade Italian dishes to holiday candies to anything on the grill, he was a great cook and loved to share his spoils with everyone. As a self-proclaimed ‘grumpy old man’, he leaves behind the legacy of a servant’s heart.
Mike is survived by his devoted son, Matt (Jennifer) Maggio of Flowood, MS, grandchildren: Jacob Maggio (17) and Angelina Maggio (11); Siblings: Ron (Tessie) Maggio, Larry (Julia) Maggio, Lori Maggio Long (Scott-deceased) , Kathy Maggio Meaney; his Uncle J.V. Maggio, Numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends that were more like family. He is preceded in death by both his parents, Sammy and Angelina Maggio, and his eldest son Bryan Maggio.
The honorary pallbearers will be Mike Matthews, Bobby Parker, Jacob Maggio, Martin Deseamus, Mark Thomey, and Ronnie Holloway.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial which will be held at St. Paschal’s Catholic Church in West Monroe, LA., starting at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, June 20, 2024.
