Services for Roy Joseph Scalia of Monroe, LA will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at St. Matthews Catholic Church in Monroe with Father Joe Martina and Father John Paul Crispin officiating. Burial will be at Mulhearn Memorial Park under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Visitation will be held on Friday, March 17, 2023 from 5pm to 7pm at Mulhearns on Sterlington Road.
Mr. Scalia passed away on Saturday evening, March 11, 2023, peacefully and comfortably in his apartment. He was born on March 26, 1930 in Bastrop, LA. He was the second of five children born to Frank R. and Mary Danna Scalia. Roy moved with his family to Monroe in 1945 from Beaumont, TX. He attended Neville High School and played American Legion Baseball. After finishing high school, he signed with the Chicago White Sox Farm Team to play 3rd Base and he also worked at Baker’s Shoe Store. In 1951, he joined the Army and was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX where he played baseball for the Army Team at Ft. Bliss and ran the First Guided Missile Program during the Korean Conflict. On November 15, 1951, Roy married his high school sweetheart, JoAnn LaMonica After the end of his Army Service, he and Joann returned to Monroe and he resumed working at Bakers Shoes where he eventually became the Store Manager. In 1966 he made a career change and began working with his father in his Service Station Business. Roy owned and operated the Exxon on North 18th Street for over 20 years.
Despite losing most of his sight at age 58, Roy lived life to the fullest in his almost 93 years. His ability to adapt was inspiring. Roy was a competitor and a survivor! He was an avid Golfer and Joann used to say he found somewhere to play 7 days a week. He was active in the community. He was very active in the Monroe Optimist Club and was honored with Optimist of the Year. In his later years, he volunteered with JoAnn in the St. Francis Auxiliary. Roy was a lifelong Catholic and loved the Rosary. He enjoyed attending Mass daily on television and loved receiving communion weekly from sweet Elizabeth Williams.
Roy and JoAnn were married for 61 years and had 3 children. Joann preceded him in death just over 10 years ago. Roy moved to St. Joseph’s Assisted Living in 2019 and quickly became very popular with the staff and residents. He had a beautiful singing voice and he loved to bless everyone with a Happy Birthday serenade; a Peppermint or a package of Oreos.
Roy is survived by his and JoAnn’s three children, Monica Long and her husband, Charlie of Covington, LA; Frank E. Scalia and his wife, Myra of North Little Rock, AR; and Michelle Conti and her husband, Gerald of Monroe, LA, He is also survived by his daughter, Teresa Gedney of Dover, Delaware. Also surviving Roy is his faithful and longtime caregiver and daughter in love, Angela “Ann” Marie Johnson “Scalia” as he fondly called her.
Roy has 11 Grandchildren. Jason Long and wife, Renee; Joseph Long and wife, Mary; Jacob Long and wife, Lauren; Joshua Long and wife, Katie. Torri Grigsby and husband, Jay; Kristin Phillips and husband, Cheyenne; Sarah Clark; Allison McPeak and husband, Casey; Brian Gedney and wife, Gabriella; Jessica Gedney and Samuel Conti.
From his Grandchildren, Roy is also survived by his 29 Great-Grand Children.
C.J., Jayde, Nathan, Mason, Blaine, Andrew, Luke, Jackson, Juliette, Ivy, Mia, Emma, Jude, Kate, Jack, Nick, Ashton, Cami Rae, Brodie, Lily Kate, Amelia, Tinlee, Tessa, Torann, Crimson, A.J., Ava, Jackson and Landon.
He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Marilou Scalia and Barbara Scalia; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins and Special Friend, Jeri Oakley.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, JoAnn and their infant son, Frederick Joseph; and, JoAnn’s parents, E.J. and Verna LaMonica. He is also preceded in death by his sisters and their spouses; Rosalie and Arnold Tucker; Rita and Dick Morrison and his brothers, Frank V. Scalia and JC Scalia.
Pallbearers serving Roy will be Grandsons Jason, Joseph, Jacob and Joshua Long, and Samuel Conti and his first cousin, Tony Scalia.
Honorary pallbearers will all his friends and staff at St. Josephs Assisted Living, Monroe, LA.
Roy was very generous throughout his lifetime and In Lieu of Flowers, please consider the following charities: MedCamps of Louisiana; St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital; Shriners Children’s Hospital and Tunnel To Towers or any Charity dear to your hearts.
Lastly, Roy’s Family would like to thank the staff and residents at St. Joseph’s Assisted Living for a wonderful 3 ½ years and the love they showered him with, especially, Keisha Wallace and Michelle Musgrove. Also, Dr. Owen Myers for his years of care and friendship; Elara Home Health and Elara Hospice for their care and support this past month.
