Funeral services for Ronald Jeffrey “Ron” Powell, 72, of Monroe, LA, will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, September 15, 2017, at First United Methodist Church, Monroe, LA with Rev. Lynn Malone officiating. A visitation will be in the parlor of the church at noon prior to the service. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. An additional visitation will be held at Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe on Thursday, September 14, 2017 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.
Ron passed away on Tuesday, September 12, 2017, at his home in Monroe.
Ron was born September 6, 1945 to Billie and Lois Powell. He grew up in Pine Bluff, AR. At age 13, he started his work career with a paper route for the Pine Bluff Commercial. At age 16 he went to work for the Mad Butcher grocery store. After high school, he graduated from the University of Arkansas at Monticello with a B.S. in Education. He then moved to Monroe where he taught school and coached basketball for four years. On June 15, 1973, Ron left teaching to pursue a career in the insurance business. In January 1974, he took over the Lamar Life Agency selling group insurance. Several years later, he started his own company, Ron Powell Corporate Benefit Plans. During this time, he served on the Louisiana Insurance Board Commission and won many awards in the insurance industry. His contributions to the community included serving as President of the Twin City Optimist Club and the Chauvin Racquet Club. He was also an active member of the Bayou DeSiard Country Club and the Paul Harris Fellow Rotary Club. He also built several office buildings in the Monroe area. In August 1970, Ron married Marsha, the love of his life. Ron and Marsha have two daughters, Martha and Ronna.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents, Billie and Lois Powell: and brother, Jerry.
Survivors include his wife, Marsha; brother, Ken Powell and wife Dianne; daughter, Martha Cascio and husband Mark, and their children, Jon Wren, Peyton and Bella Harrel, and Thomas Cascio; daughter, Ronna Hartt and husband Wayne, and their children, Will Edwards, Seth, Grady, and Jenna Hartt; and longtime office manager and business partner, Mrs. Jo Forbes.
Pallbearers will be Larry Blackman, Bryan Caldwell, Tommy Culp, Cliff Lawrence, Freddie McHenry, Lyle Miller, Tom Nicholson, Joe Rosenberg, Tommy Zentner and Mac Wear.
The family would like to thank his hospice nurse, Shannon Newton, for the excellent care she provided.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, Monroe or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
