Rollie, of Monroe, was born in Morristown, MN and formerly resided in Pine Bluff, AR, and New Orleans, LA. Mr. Downhour was the air traffic control tower chief at the Monroe Regional Airport until his retirement in 1993. He was the hardest working "retired" man you would ever meet. He owned and operated WoodCo, a firewood and home improvement business. Paw Paw Rollie enjoyed the outdoors and fixing things. He was an active member of his church, a pilot, and member of the Civil Air Patrol. He was proud to have served his country in the United States Navy where he learned his trade in air traffic control during The Korean Conflict. Rollie was born to the marriage of Forest “Sug” and Helen Downhour. He was the 4th of 10 children. He always smiled when remembering the childhood escapades with his siblings.
Rolland “Rollie” Eugene Downhour passed into eternity Sunday, August 12, 2018, at the age of 83 years old. He is preceded in death by his parents, Forest “Sug” and Helen Hermel Downhour; and siblings, Forest Jr., Robert (Bob), Don, Virginia Standke, and Dennis.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Frances Sandoz Downhour; sons, Bill (Cindy) of Shreveport, Mike (Sheila Kay), and Matthew (Tracy) of Monroe. He was proud of his 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister and brothers, Laurel Johnson, John, David, and Jerry.
Pallbearers are grandsons, Josh Downhour, Tim Downhour, Shawn Downhour, Taylor Downhour, Matt Hendrix, and family friend, Billy Weeks.
The family would like to thank the staff of Louisiana Hospice & Palliative Care; his great nurses, sitters, Leann and Tim; and special caretaker, Gale Palm. The family would like to thank the members of The Patriot Guard, for personally watching over our father at the visitation, funeral and escorting the funeral procession to the cemetery; and to the United States Navy for rendering military honors at the cemetery.
