Robert Joseph "Joe" Downs

August 5, 1950 — December 14, 2021

Robert Joseph “Joe” Downs left this life on December 14, 2021.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Tommy and Roberta Downs, and his brother, Walter. Joe is survived by his daughters, Bertie and Ali; his son-in-law T.J., and his grandson, 2J. Other survivors include his brother, Harvey; nieces Melanie, Mary Ann, and Sarah; nephews David, Parker, Paul, and Christopher Thomas; cousins Laurelle, Johnny, and Nancy; and the mother of his children, Mary Ann.

Joe loved golf. He really loved golf. He also loved good music, dancing, whiskey, cold beer, and, let’s be honest, a good cigarette. But mostly Joe loved his friends. He rarely told a story that did not include one of his oldest friends—Moon, Greg, Bill McS., Burt, Bob, Bill G., George, Max, Milton, Rob, Nelson, and John. More recently, Joe stayed busy with friends Alan, Bob, Mike, Frank, Jay, Ronnie, Jim, Byron, and many more. His daughters apologize if anyone has been left off this list—there are a lot of you and they thank you all for the joy you brought to Joe’s life.

His girls want to thank Mina for the extraordinary care and support she gave to Joe. Bertie and Ali also wish to acknowledge Laura and the special friendship she shared with Joe.

Grateful thanks are also extended to Karol from Louisiana Hospice and Palliative Care, Samantha from Express Medical Staffing, as well as the staff at St. Francis Medical Center and CHRISTUS St. Joseph’s Continuing Care.

Yes, we are sad—we all will miss Joe terribly. He was one of a kind and will be impossible to replace. Let him live on in your stories, your laughs, and the good times you share with each other.

Now pour yourself a glass of Jameson.
Here’s to Joe.
