Richard W. (Dick) Sherman
May 19, 1922 — January 9, 2019
Funeral services for Richard W. (Dick) Sherman, 96, of Monroe, will be held at 1:00 PM Friday, January 11, 2019, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Lynn Malone officiating. Interment will follow at Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, Rayville, LA. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Thursday, January 10, 2019, at the church.
Mr. Sherman was born May 19, 1922, in Lime City, OH, and made his final flight on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. As a member of General Chennault’s Flying Tigers, Dick flew 52 combat missions in a B25 Mitchell bomber. In February 1944 his aircraft was shot down near Hong Kong. With the assistance of the Chinese, he and his crew were able to return to their base two weeks later. Dick also received the Purple Heart for wounds received when his plane was attacked in June 1944. Returning to the US, he was stationed at Selman Field and remained in the area after the War. Later, as an Air Force Reservist, he served in Germany during the Berlin Wall Crisis. For many years, Dick was active in the American Legion, serving both as Post and District Commander. A founding member of the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum, he donated many volunteer hours to this organization. Due to the loving care of the superb staff, he thrived for the last 5 years at the Northeast Louisiana War Veterans Home.
Mr. Sherman was a member of First United Methodist Church, Monroe, and L.B. Faulk Post #13 – American Legion.
Mr. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Chester Sherman and Carol Waggoner Sherman; and 2 great grandsons, Layton Paul Sullivan and Conner Dale Harris.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Tucker Sherman of Monroe; son, Richard Scott Sherman of West Monroe; daughter, Mary/Mitzi Cruickshank and husband John of San Antonio, TX; son, Michael Stuart Sherman and wife Maribeth of Vidalia, LA; five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Robert Wright, Joseph B. Wright, Roger Hale, Danny Brumbelow, Darrell Dean, and Gene Baker.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Chennault Military and Aviation Museum, 701 Kansas Lane, Monroe, LA 71203.
A wonderful husband, father, and citizen, his family and friends salute this true American Hero and thank him for his many years of service.
