Richard S. (Rick) Owens

Funeral services for Richard S. (Rick) Owens, age 66, will be held Thursday, October 2, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in Monroe with Dr. Glen Owens and Rev. John Dobbs officiating. Mr. Don Weems will deliver the eulogy. A family burial service will follow in Cruikshank-Anthony Cemetery, Colfax, LA, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe.Born January 25, 1948 in Minden, LA, Rick passed away peacefully at his home in Monroe on September 29 after a year-long courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.Rick was retired from ULM where he was employed 25 years, loyally serving the Athletic and Intramural departments. An avid golfer, LSU football letterman and fan, and a faithful ULM supporter, he was full of life and love. He was passionate about those things most important to him, his family and his friends. He loved cooking, helping his children, entertaining his grandchildren, and spending time in his yard and on his patio.Rick was preceded in death by his parents, James T. Owens, Sr. and Ora Lee Owens; brother, James T. Owens, Jr.; and brother-in-law, Billy Joe Anthony.Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Vera Anthony Owens; son, Richard A. Owens and wife Sami of Monroe, LA; daughter, Kimberly Nelson and husband Bobby of Fishers, IN; grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Nelson, Emily Nelson, and Matthew Nelson of Fishers, IN, and Peyton Owens and Mason Owens of Monroe, LA; brother, Albert Owens of Dallas, TX; sisters-in-law, Jeanette Owens of Shreveport, LA, Diane Owens of Dallas, TX, and Elner Anthony of Colfax, LA; niece, Darlene Anthony of Colfax, LA; nephews, Mark Anthony and Kristi of Colfax, LA and Justin Owens and Lindsey of Camp Pendleton, CA; great niece, Callie Ivy of Colfax, LA; and longtime friend and tailgating buddy, Don Weems.Serving as pallbearers will be Don Weems, Lou St. Amant, David Edgar, Clay Weems, TJ Shuflin, and Bart Dornier. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie D.
