Father William H. Carey, retired priest of the Diocese of Shreveport, died at his home on November 22, 2009.  Born in Jamaica, Queens County, New York January 26, 1933, he attended the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Huntington, New York and was ordained to the priesthood May 30, 1959 by Bishop Bryan J. McEntegart at St. James Cathedral, Brooklyn.  In 1970 he obtained a Master of Arts from New York University and in 1985 a Doctor of Philosophy in Religion and Counseling from Columbia Pacific University in San Rafael, California. This year Father Carey celebrated his golden jubilee as a priest.

 
Rosary services will be held at St. Matthew Church, 121 Jackson Street, Monroe, on Tuesday, November 24, 6 p.m.  Funeral Mass will take place at St. Matthew Church, Wednesday, November 25 at 10 a.m.  Officiating will be the Most Reverend Michael G. Duca, Bishop of Shreveport.  Interment will follow in St. Matthew Cemetery, Monroe.  Honorary pallbearers will be the priests of the Diocese of Shreveport.
 
Prior to coming to the Diocese of Shreveport, Father Carey served parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn and as assistant professor at St. Vincent’s College of St. John’s University in Jamaica.  He went on to serve in the Chaplain Corps of the United States Navy for three years obtaining an honorable discharge in 1978.  At that time he returned to hospital and educational work.

 
In 1984, Father Carey came to the Diocese of Shreveport as chaplain in St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe.  He subsequently served as Director of Pastoral Care at Schumpert Medical Center, Shreveport and later as chaplain and campus minister at Louisiana State University Medical Center and School, Shreveport.

 
His service in parish ministry included appointments as parochial vicar at the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans, Shreveport, and St. Joseph Church, Mansfield.  He served as pastor at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Shreveport; St. Matthew Church, Monroe; St. John the Baptist Church, Many; Sacred Heart Church, Rayville and St. Theresa Chapel, Delhi.  He held the position of Diocesan Coordinator of Health Affairs and Consultant in Medical Ethics until his death.  Other ministries included work in the Diocesan Tribunal, membership in the Presbyteral Council and Vicar Forane for the Southern Deanery.
