Moore, 88, of Monroe will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Monroe, LA with the Most Reverend Michael G. Duca and Reverend Keith Garvin officiating. Monsignor Moore, a retired priest of the Diocese of Shreveport, passed away April 13, 2015, at his home in Monroe, LA. In 1943, at the age of sixteen, he graduated from Holy Savior Menard Catholic High School in Alexandria. From there, he went on to LSU where he was an active student from 1945 until 1947. In 1947 he joined the Merchant Marines and subsequently served for twenty months where he was part of the Marshall Plan transporting goods to Europe. In 1947 he returned to LSU and graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in education in 1949. After graduating from LSU, he taught for one year at DeRidder High School and was then drafted in 1950 into the U.S. Army to serve in the Korean War. He was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston before being transferred to Walter Reed Medical Center and finally to a MASH Unit in Korea. After being honorably discharged, he enrolled at Maryhill Seminary in Pineville, LA in 1952 and in 1953 began his studies at Notre Dame Seminary. He was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Alexandria on June 6, 1959. After his ordination, he was sent to serve as the assistant priest at St. Joseph Parish in Shreveport. From there, he served as assistant priest at Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish in Monroe; Sacred Heart in Pineville; and St. Mary’s Assumption in Cottonport. In 1971, he was named pastor of St. Clement Parish in Vivian and served there until 1973 when he returned to Jesus the Good Shepherd to serve as pastor. He remained pastor at Jesus the Good Shepherd for 24 years until he requested the status of senior priest in 1997, serving an additional two years until full retirement. During that time he served St. Lawrence Parish in the Swartz community. He served as Vicar Forane of the Diocese of Shreveport Eastern Deanery and Judge in the Tribunal for nearly ten years. He was also a member of the College of Consultors. In October of 1989, he was honored with the title of Monsignor by the Diocese of Shreveport. From the time Fr. Moore was named pastor of Jesus the Good Shepherd, he was always a constant in the parish school as well as St. Frederick High School. His love for the families of his church and the schools was evident in the fact that every day until he was physically unable, he would come by the church office to visit and check his mail and then walk the halls of Jesus the Good Shepherd School, stopping to check on teachers and visit with the students. He had an uncanny ability to remember the names of every one of his parishioners as well as their families and he always made sure to ask about their families. Fr. Moore was truly a father to so many and although he will be missed by all, his life and the impression he made on everyone he came in contact with will be felt for generations. His master said to him, “Well done, my good and faithful servant. Since you were faithful in small matters, I will give you great responsibilities. Come, share your master’s joy.” Matthew 25:23Father Moore was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Rose Moore, brother Gerald Isadore Moore, and sisters Elizabeth Weishaar, Margaret Fissinger and Catherine Waguespack.Survivors include his brother Thomas Aquinas Moore, M.D. and sister Mary Moore Duncan, as well as a very large extended family of nieces, Nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.Memorials may be made to Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church and School, 2510 Emerson St., Monroe, LA 71201; The Retired Catholic Priest fund of the Diocese of Shreveport, or the charity of your choice.Visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m., Friday, April 17, 2015 at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church with a Rosary at 6:30 p.m. and a Vigil Wake at 7:00 p.m. Online Registry/Condolences: www.mulhearnfuneralhome.com
