Solomon, 89 of Monroe, LA, will be held at 10:00AM Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at Lea Joyner Memorial United Methodist Church in Monroe with Reverends Ben McGehee, Betty Swanson and Weldon Bares officiating. Graveside service will be held at 2:00PM Tuesday at Crowville Masonic Cemetery with Rev. Bobby Burgess officiating.
“Brother Joe”, as known by many, was born October 3, 1927, to Davis and Annie Solomon in Crowville, LA. He passed away after a long illness at St. Joseph’s Assisted Living in Monroe surrounded by his wife and daughters.
Following in his older brother’s footsteps after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Brother Joe joined the Army where he served as a Transportation Sergeant Specialist. After being honorably discharged from his Army duties after WWII, Joe returned home to Crowville and enjoyed a successful career as a salesman for H. Mickel Dry Goods. He traveled all over northeast Louisiana, and his customers loved to see his smiling face.
At the age of 47, he gave up his successful sales career to answer the call of the ministry. He attended seminary at Southern Methodist University. In 1974, he became the minister at Kilbourne United Methodist Church and Locust Grove United Methodist Church in West Carroll parish where he served until 1981. In 1982, he was appointed the minister for Ringgold United Methodist Church, Castor United Methodist Church, and Grand Bayou Methodist church in Bienville Parish.
In 1984, he was appointed the minister at Amite United Methodist Church. He was in Amite only a short time before he was sent to heal and pastor his beloved home church, Southside United Methodist Church after the death of the Reverend Lea Joyner.
Joe retired from the ministry in 1992, but he kept on preaching. He was passionate about spreading the word of God. He ministered to hundreds of thousands of people and brought many souls to know God’s word. He lived his life as he preached. He was a spiritual and Godly man and it showed in all that he did.
Not only was Brother Joe a “Fisher of Men”, he also enjoyed fishing for white perch in his spare time, a hobby and passion passed down to all of his grandsons. He loved to work in his garden growing vegetables and tomatoes. Holidays were a special time for everyone who knew him because of his excellent divinity and millionaire fudge candies. He and Irene would only make his candies between Thanksgiving and Christmas to share with all his family and friends.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Davis and Annie Solomon; brothers, Abe Solomon, Albert Solomon and Mickel Solomon; sisters, Annie Sinclair and Julia Nelson; wife, Eloise “Bunchie” Solomon; and son, Jerry Kyle Solomon.
