Rachel R. Shelby

May 8, 1924 — January 13, 2020

Rachel R. Shelby, 95, of Monroe, Louisiana went to be with her Lord Monday morning, January 13, 2020, at Northern Louisiana Medical Center in Ruston. She was born in Dallas County, Arkansas to Emma Rhodes and William Andrew Rushing on May 8, 1924. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J.E; brothers, Alec, Tom, AB, Henry D, Dick, AJ, Jack; sister, Ollie; daughter-in-law, Laurie Walker Shelby.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Randy Cloud of Conway, Arkansas; her son Ronnie, of Monroe, Louisiana; seven grandsons, Chris, Craig, Mark, Michael, Stewart, Will and Scott; seventeen great-grandchildren, Daniel, Kaleigh, Sarah Beth, Amanda, Zachary, Mason, Kelsey, Abbey, Ryleigh, Macy, Jordan, Davis, Mallory, Madison, Jake, Molly and Tyler; sister-in-law, Barbara Attwood and her husband Jim Ed; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

She was raised in Cleveland County, Arkansas and attended school in Rison, Arkansas. There she met her Rison Wildcat sweetheart, J.E. Shelby. They were married February 2, 1946, in Palmyra, Arkansas. They enjoyed 45 wonderful years of marriage until J.E’s death on December 31, 1991. During their marriage they lived in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, Dallas, Texas, and Monroe, Louisiana. She has been a resident of Monroe since 1967.

She was a member of Rowland Road Baptist Church for over 52 years. She loved her Lord and Savior. Her Christian spirit was exemplified daily. She loved to cook and entertain her family and friends at her Anita Lane home. Her children and grandchildren were her life. She enjoyed visiting her family and friends in Arkansas as her health allowed. She loved Borden milk and ice cream.

She was very determined and defied the odds by living in her home past her 95th birthday and driving through her 94th birthday. Only recently did illness take her from her home as she transitioned to the Ruston Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The family would like to thank the staff and nurse Jeanine for the care and attention they gave to her.
