Pinkey Alexander Poag, III

October 9, 1947 — February 27, 2014

Funeral services for Alex Poag, 66, of Monroe, LA will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, March 3, 2014, at Lea Joyner Memorial United Methodist Church with Rev. Betty Swanson officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe. Alex passed away February 27, 2014.
Alex was born to the late Mildred Cotton and P.A. Poag, Jr. on October 9, 1947 in Monroe, LA. Alex lived in New Orleans, Metairie, and Houston, TX during his childhood, and moved back to Monroe in time to go to Ouachita Junior High and Ouachita High School. He graduated from Ouachita High School and was a proud Lion the rest of his life!
Alex worked 17 years as a math and reading tutor for the Ouachita Parish School Board. He also held a number of positions with the Ouachita Parish Library, Louisiana Teachers’ Supply, Cooley Printers, Osterland Recreation Center, Brookshires, and Monroe Sheltered Workshop where he served as Education Director. He had great pride in being able to do his best in each situation he was in.
Alex loved his family and loved to take part in pumpkin carving, Derby parties, meals out, watching nieces’ and nephews’ ballgames, and visiting Kentucky and New Mexico. He was a member of the Krewe of Janus and always loved the Mardi Gras parades. He also loved to paint ceramics at the West Ouachita Senior Center and won ribbons for quite a number of his pieces. On Thursdays (and Mondays, and Wednesdays, if he could) Alex loved to play Canasta at the Carolyn Rose Strauss Senior Center. He was usually the only male…and he loved it!
But the passion in Alex’s life was youth sports. He loved kids and so Alex coached approximately 40 years with the Monroe Youth Baseball Association (9-14 years), with numerous All-Star teams and championships. Alex also coached YMCA Football, Monroe Youth Basketball, and Osterland Youth Basketball, Fatama Jr. High (7 & 8) Boys Basketball, and St. Frederick Jr. High (7 & 8) Boys Basketball.. He started the Golf team at Ouachita Parish High School and was golf coach for 5 years. He also started the St. Frederick 7th & 8th Grade Baseball team . He loved team sports and studied the game, the kids, and the rules. He’d let you know if he thought you were making the wrong call!
Alex was also a member of the North East Louisiana Bowling Association, past President of the NELA Bowling Association, and Jr. Bowling Coach—Monroe-West Monroe. He loved bowling and was a member of several tournament-winning league teams. He wouldn’t quit bowling in a tournament, even though his pacemaker started kicking!
Alex loved his church, Lea Joyner United Methodist Church, and was a proud member of the Newcomer Sunday School class and the Young At Heart Senior Choir. He kept telling Elaine, the choir director, he would sing a solo. Thank goodness she never took him up on it! Of course, Alex taught Sunday School to children and assisted with the youth groups. He loved to participate in Trick or Trunk and always had a game ready for the kids.
Everywhere Alex went he would be stopped by someone who knew him from all his various interests. He will be missed greatly!
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred Cotton Poag and P.A. Poag, Jr., brother Allen Meredith Poag, paternal grandparents Maude and P.A. Poag Sr., many members of the maternal Cotton family, and beloved aunt Margaret Poag Jacobs Walker.
He is survived by much beloved step-mother Faye Hynum Poag with whom he spent the many last years enjoying an abundant life taking care of each other, step-sister Cherie (Scott) Henderson, nephews Chris Lodgen, Jeff (Lisa) Lodgen, Brad Lodgen, and niece Cassie Henderson, great nieces and nephews Chastin Farley, Hunter and Hannah Lodgen, and Carter and Madelyn Lodgen. He loved his cousins Rob Smith, Allen Smith, and Judy Jacobs (Tom) Williams like a sister as well as her children Jay, Henry, and Susan Florshiem. His loves at home were his (and Faye’s) 5 cats—he loved to spoil them!
Pallbearers will be Johne Brooks, Jerry Crise, Scott Hart, Frank McGough, Chris Strickler, and Benny Tannehill.
Visitation will be from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM Sunday at Lea Joyner Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Monroe Youth Baseball Association, P.O. Box 148826, Monroe, LA 71207-4826.
