PATRICIA JUNE PEARSON MERIWETHER
April 7, 1924- August 27th, 2008
Mulhearn Funeral Home
Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA
Patricia June Pearson Meriwether died Wednesday from complications of post-polio syndrome.
Pat was born in Sumner, Mississippi to the union of Oscar Wallace Pearson and Marion Mabry Simpson. She graduated from All Saints Episcopal School, and attended Stephens College before graduating from Randolph-Macon College. She earned her MSW at Columbia University.
In 1951, Pat married Dr. Thompson White “Pete” Meriwether, and in 1957 the couple and their three daughters moved to Monroe. Once her girls were in school, Pat practiced as a psychiatric social worker, first at the Monroe Mental Health Center, where she was director of children's services for a number of years, and later in private practice, providing counseling services for families and children. She was also called on to testify as an expert witness in numerous court cases.
Always a devoted parent, Pat became a single mother upon Pete's death in 1967. She proceeded to lead by example, raising her daughters to be strong, independent women. She taught them honesty, responsibility, and fair play, and they watched as Pat's compassion, wisdom and honesty endeared her to patients, friends and family. People just trusted Pat intuitively, and her kindness never let them down. She changed many lives for the better and left a lasting, living legacy.
Pat will also be remembered for her irrepressible enjoyment of life. She survived polio at an early age to become an avid basketball and tennis player. She loved fishing and camping, and drove her RV all over the US, Canada, and Mexico. She made friends everywhere she went. When health problems forced her to reduce her activities, she polished up her bridge skills and became a ham radio operator. From wheelchair and bed she coordinated church and social activities and continued to enjoy her favorite sports and the activities of her children and grandchildren. She never surrendered to depression but contributed to the lives of others right to the end.
Pat was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Thompson White Meriwether, and her parents, Oscar Wallace Pearson and Marion Pearson Dunn. She is survived by her daughters, Sunny (Marion S.) Meriwether and her life partner Joe Saunders; Charlotte M. Wrather and her husband Chris; and Betty M. Adkins and her husband Marty. Other survivors include her beloved grandchildren: Patricia Louise Montgomery; Mary Margaret Bradley and her husband Corey; Robert T. Montgomery; and Mabry M. Slemmons Agnew and her husband Brendan; as well as her great-granddaughter Hailey Blachley. She is also survived by her brother, William W. Pearson, his wife Betty B. Pearson, and their daughter Erie P. Vitiello, her husband Michael and their children Elizabeth and James. Other survivors include nephew Stan Haskell and nieces Lisa and Sue Meriwether and their children.
The family wishes to thank all those who cared for Pat, especially Betty Walker, Doris Switzer, Lisa Boughton, Eddie Porter, and Lena Henderson. Special thanks also to Hospice Care of Louisiana, who helped make Pat's final days comfortable and pain-free.
A memorial service for Pat will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, August 30th, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
