Funeral Services for Nell Holder Walters, 84, will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday January 23, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church, Monroe, with Rev. Shawn Hornsby officiating. Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery.
Nell passed away Friday, January 19, 2018 in Richmond, Virginia. The daughter of immigrants from Oklahoma, William B. Holder and Gertrude Foster, she left her life in rural Arkansas to marry Gladden S. Walters, Jr. of Monroe. Here, they raised 3 sons, Douglas Marion, Gladden Saunders and John Milam.
She was the sole matron in a household of 4 men centered around Gladden, the love of her life. They were married for 46 years, until his passing in 2004. She gave love more than she received.
As owner of Johnnie Smith Elbert, Inc., she was an accomplished business-woman, delivering the latest is fashion elegance to the women of Monroe. Her natural sense of style was always on display. She was a fierce competitor, with a love of golf and especially tennis. Curious by nature, she doggedly pursued her college degree, receiving a BA from NLU at the age of 71. She masterfully balanced her family, career, education, self-interests and faith.
She had an amazing sense of humor and a particular love for holidays, family and friends. She was a devoted, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was also a little feisty!
Survivors include her best friend and sister, Jean Norris; brother, Homer Holder; sons, Doug Walters, husband of Karen Walters, Gladden Walters, husband of Michelle Walters, Milam Walters, husband of Heidi Crapol; grandchildren, Beth Walters Gordon, Jonathan Walters, Lindsey Walters Gardner, Clayton W. Memorials should be made to Alzheimer Foundation in the hopes of eradicating a disease that robbed us of our last years with Nell.
