Minnie “Minnie Ma” Letisha Tippen Spillers Melton, born in the community of Womack, LA on December 16, 1917, passed away on May 20, 2012 at the age of 94. She was a resident of Chatham, LA and was a faithful Christian who was known for her service to others. She and her family had multiple businesses in Chatham for many years, including the Texaco station and then the restaurant that she decided to build in her retirement, “Minnie Ma’s Kitchen”, which served as a community gathering place for over 30 years. Her apple turnovers and pies were in high demand, as was her personal attention when out-of-town customers came in to see her. She found pleasure in her many valued friends, and loved to drink coffee and play cards with all of her friends and family. She enjoyed cooking, fishing, gardening, painting, sewing, and making quilts. She was particularly proud of her quilts, some of which won ribbons at the fairs. She was honored by the community in so many ways, being named as Grand Marshal of parades and receiving community appreciation awards, all of which she treasured because her community meant so much to her.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She was the daughter of Walter Clement and Francis Elizabeth Tippen and had seven siblings, sisters, Selma Flowers, Irene Culp, and Lorraine Smith, and brothers, Leon Tippen, Rodel Tippen, her twin, Melvin Tippen, and Lesley Tippen. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Thomas Spillers, Jr. and husband, Clyde Melton. She is survived by her daughter, Martha Sue Chambless; sons, James Joel Spillers and wife Rita, son, Thomas Delton Spillers, and step-daughter, Claudine Cartwright and husband, Clifford; her grandchildren, Melinda Chambless, Rusty Chambless, James Ryan Spillers and wife, Linda, and Erin Spillers Rogers and husband, Jason, and step-granddaughter, Sherry Ezell and husband, Wiley;and her great-grandchildren, Mallory Spillers, Noah Spillers, Luke Spillers, Daniel Rogers, Sarah Rogers, and David Ezell; and her many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Thank you, Father in Heaven, for the strong presence she had in all our lives, and for the Godly example she was to us all.
