Memorial service for Mildred Summers Maurer, 97, of Monroe, will be held at 2:00pm, August 14th 2014, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Oliver Road, Monroe, with Rev. Paul McComack officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.Mrs. Maurer, (Ret) Teacher and Regional Director Louisiana Restaurant Association NE, died at her home in Monroe on August 11 2014.Mrs. Maurer was born on June 7, 1917, in Danville, Illinois, the daughter of Claus Clarkson Summers and Elsie Mae Pool Summers. One sister, Virginia Monzell Summers, Grandson Tim Maurer and her parents all preceded her in death.Mildred graduated from Danville High School in 1935 and when on to obtain a Bachelor of Education from Eastern Illinois University. She continued to further her education by attended Bowling Green University, University of Illinois and St. John Fisher University that accumulated in a Master’s Degree of Education. Mildred met and married the love of her life Mark Maurer from Springfield, Illinois. After graduation she taught elementary school in Danville, Springfield and Mattoon Illinois, Cheyenne Wyoming and Rochester, New York. Mr. and Mrs. Mark Maurer moved from Rochester, NY to Monroe, LA in 1968 where he worked for Century Telephone Enterprises, Inc. and she later started working for the Louisiana Restaurant Association. They became parents to one lovely son Nicholas. Nick she so fondly called him. Mildred was active in local and regional organizations and clubs, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Life member of the Order of Eastern Star # 307, Danville Illinois, Life member of Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Illinois Alpha Gamma and Louisiana Alpha Delta President, honored in New Orleans and placed in Louisiana Restaurant Association Hall of Fame, Kid’s Caf at Children Museum was dedicated to Mildred in August 1998. She is survived by her only son Nicholas (Nick) Summers Maurer, and his wife, Shirley and Grand-Nieces Amber Nicole Maurer and Katlynn Michelle Maurer of West Monroe, LA; one first cousin George Donald Summers, Reston, VA. She will also be missed by a host of other relatives and friends.The family expresses gratitude to her physician: Dr. Michael Haywood. Special recognition is extended to her neighbor Dr. Wilson Campbell; and Mary Young, Emma Cooper, RaNeiqua Bailey, Kimberla Lewis and Jequanta Young who provided excellent twenty-four hour care.
