Funeral services for Medra Johnston Carbone, 90, of Shreveport, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 2, 2014 at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road with Rev. Tom Harrison officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park.
Mrs. Carbone passed away Monday, April 28, 2014, at Glen Retirement Village in Shreveport. Medra was born June 7, 1923, in Sikes, LA. After graduating from Sikes High School in 1939, she received her nurses training in New Orleans and Monroe. After which she was employed by Schumpert Hospital in Shreveport, St. Francis Hospital in Monroe, and by Dr. Henry Guerriero. Mrs. Carbone worked as a nurse up until her marriage to her beloved husband Monty. Together they co-owned Louisiana Machinery Co. and a large farm and ranch operation south of Monroe known as the “Cat Farm”. They resided in Monroe until the 1970’s and then maintained a dual residence in Boca Raton, FL. Her true love and joy in life was her family. Through her generosity she ensured each an education. She and Monty were members of the Bayou Desiard Country Club and Coral Ridge Golf Club where she and Monty enjoyed playing golf year round.
Mrs. Carbone was preceded in death by her husband Matthew Joseph “Monty” Carbone; her parents, Luther L. and Sarah Jane Johnston; two sisters, Una J. Nichols and Mavis J. Penn; five brothers, Charles Rayford Johnston, Clarence Johnston, Elton Johnston, L.V. Johnston, and R.L. Johnston; and nephews, Jimmy Johnston and Michael Johnston Penn.
Survivors include; two nieces Joy Lynn Porter, Jamie Biedenharn; eight nephews Billy Johnston, Clifford Johnston, Glenn Edward Johnston, Rayford Johnston, Richard Johnston, Roger Johnston, Chuck Penn, and Joey Johnston; and a number of great nieces and nephews.
The nephews will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday prior to the service.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to her caregivers, Clara Cole, Jennifer Gilyard, Michelle Hamilton, Myiesha Gilyard; and to the staff and nurses of The Glen Retirement Village.
Memorials may be made to Louisiana Baptist Children’s home or Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
