Funeral Services Celebrating the Life of Matthew “Matt” William Gilbert, 58, of West Monroe, LA will be held at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, September 14, 2019 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, West Monroe, LA with Rev. Michael Wood officiating. Interment will follow in the Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA.

Mr. Matthew W. Gilbert was born March 2, 1961 and passed away September 7, 2019. Matt worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield as an insurance agent for the greater part of his career. The most important thing to him was his Christian faith and spending time with his family. Matt always enjoyed being “The Grill Master” for the Gilbert family get-togethers. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Anne, and their two sons. Some of their favorite vacations were visiting national parks in the US, and also traveling to various parts of Europe. Matt found great joy in spending time with his grandson, Brayden. He also had many hobbies including his unique talent for wood carving. In his leisure time, Matt taught himself to carve bears, cats, wood spirits and relief carving. He enjoyed fishing and hunting with his brothers, sons, nephews and friends.
At the young age of 16, Matt was successfully treated at St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital. As a result of his extensive treatments, he had heart and lung complications that plagued him throughout his life. Despite continuous medical problems, his attitude towards life remained positive and his Christian faith grew stronger. Matt appreciated even the smallest things. He often said to Anne, “Everyday given to me is a gift”.

He is preceded in death by his father, William Gilbert, mother, Otta Baker Gilbert, and brother, Dr. Robert D. Gilbert (Danny).

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Anne Callens Gilbert; sons, Justin L. Gilbert, Anthony W. Gilbert and wife, Christina; grandson, Brayden Gilbert; sister, Joyce E. Sharp; brother, James A. Gilbert, and wife Evelyn; Godchild, Roxane Shirazi; several nieces, nephews, and numerous relatives on both sides of the family.

Pallbearers will be, John David Gilbert, Nathan Gilbert, Yohan Shirazi, Joel Turner, Chris Ussery, and Garland Waites, Jr.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until service time on Saturday.

The Gilbert family would like to sincerely thank Dr. James Smith for his patient and kind care for Matt during these last few months. Matt was touched by his compassionate and humble care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital.
