Private family services will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA
Mary was born September 3, 1928, in Rayville, LA to Lula Bell Ethridge and Alvin Starnes Lane, Sr. and passed Sunday, April 23, 2017, in Rayville surrounded by family. Mary graduated from Louisiana Tech with a degree in Education. She enjoyed teaching in the parishes of Richland, Bienville and Tensas. While pursuing additional education she met and fell in love with a young coach, “Mac.” After marrying she became a devoted wife and mother as well as an excellent cook. She loved opening her home to family and friends, especially to her grandchildren and their friends. There was always room for another at Gammaw’s table. An avid gardener and floral designer, Mary was a faithful member of the Palmetto Garden Club and Tensas Garden Club, holding an active membership for over 60 years. She was also an enthusiastic bridge player, forming lasting friendships at the table. Mary lived her faith by doing what she loved, sharing with others. A reassuring touch, a beautiful daylily out of her yard, a funny story or a gentle reminder to count your blessings, “Miss Mary” made sure you didn’t leave empty-handed.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 65 years, James Leslie(Mac) McConathy, Sr.
She is survived by her daughter, Melissa McConathy Smith (Mike); sons, James L. (Jim) McConathy, Jr. (Tammy), and Thomas L. McConathy (Jill); brother, Alvin Lane, Jr.; trusted friend/son, Joe Watkins; grandchildren, Bradford Smith (Amie), Stewart Smith (Bay), Daniel Smith (Shelby), Adam McConathy (Theresa), Caroline McConathy Schneider (Davis), Chandler Leija, Roman McConathy, Maddox McConathy, Britton McConathy, Tyler McConathy, Jacob May, and Luke McConathy; great-grandchildren, Allen Smith, Hannah Smith, Linton Smith, Anne Douglas Smith, Lane Smith, Cole McConathy, Carson McConathy, Collin McConathy, Addison McConathy, Asa McConathy.
Our family would like to express our deep appreciation to Joe Watkins for loving and caring for Mom and Dad through the years and a special thanks to Vera White for her care and attention to our parents.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons and Joe Watkins
