It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Dell Meares Neill announces her passing after a brief illness, on Thursday, October 6, 2022, in Sugar Land TX, at the age of 90 years.
Mary Dell, affectionately known as “Nana” by her family, was a native of Shreveport, LA where she attended Byrd High School. After attending and graduating from LA Tech with her BS degree, she made her home in Monroe, LA. She attended and was active in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where she served as UMYF Counselor, Sunday School teacher, nursery helper, hospital visitation lay pastor and finance committee member. She worked for Louisiana Machinery progressing her career from an administrative assistant to an integral part of the management leadership team until she retired in 1997.
Nana enjoyed gardening and spending time by her pool on West Deborah Drive. She never would deny a bowl of ice cream in the evening or an invitation to color with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with her numerous friends, who will remember her as a person who lit up any room.
Mary Dell was preceded in death by her son, William Meares Neill; her parents, William H. Meares and May Warner Meares; and grandmother, Della Warner. She is survived by her daughter, Laura Neill Russell and husband Brandon, daughter in law, Alysa Kotwitz Neill Webb; and her grandchildren, Reagan and Riley Russell, Addison Neill, Samantha Neill Martin and husband Terrell.
Visitation will be held 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 13 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA with a memorial service to follow. A private graveside service will be held at Forest Park Cemetery, St. Vincent Avenue, Shreveport, LA. Officiating will be Reverend R.B. Moore, Senior Pastor.
Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Jackson, H.S. (Steve) Allen, WM. Timothy Allen, Jeffrey Key Golson, Daniel Breese Jones, and Guy Christopher Jones.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Paul’s UMC, the Methodist Children’s Home or Volunteers of America. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Greatwood Assisted Living, the Village at Sugar Land and Houston Hospice.
