Martha S. Walker

On Sunday, March 28, 2021, Martha S. Walker passed away peacefully at home. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. Martha was born on February 22, 1922 to Judge William Lee Swallows and Martha Hutcheson Swallows in Algood, Tennessee. She was raised in Algood and attended David Lipscomb College in Nashville for 1 year before transferring to Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee graduating with a B.A. in Business Administration in 1943. It was at Tennessee Tech that she met William A. Walker, Jr. of Sparta, Tennessee. They subsequently were married in Algood, Tennessee on October 13, 1943. They were married for 69 years until his death on September 5, 2012.
Martha and W.A. spent time in Decatur, Mississippi; Austin, Texas; and, ultimately, Monroe. W.A had a long teaching career in education. He retired in 1986 as Professor Emeritus in History from ULM. Martha taught high school, college, worked for the Austin public schools in administration while W.A. pursued his Ph.D. from the University of Texas. When they settled in Monroe in 1955 Martha began a 31-year career at Hudson, Potts, and Bernstein the oldest legal firm in Monroe.
They loved the southwestern United States and traveled extensively in New Mexico, Colorado, and Hawaii during their working careers and after their joint retirement in 1986. They traveled yearly to Santa Fe, New Mexica and fell in love with native pueblo pottery and jewelry.
Martha is survived by her only son; Colonel William A. Walker, III, DDS, USAF Retired, and his wife Rebecca G. Walker of San Antonio, Texas; three granddaughters, Jennifer Elizabeth Walker of San Antonio, Texas, Julie Caperton Melton and her husband, Chad, of Warrenton, Virginia, and Kristin Lee Link and her husband, Brian, of San Antonio, Texas; two step-granddaughters; Kristin M. MacMane and her husband, Troy, of Houston, Texas; and Courtney M. Raysik and her husband, Jeff, of Erie, Colorado; two great grandsons, Presley William Walker of San Antonio, Texas, and Walker Fair Melton of Warrenton, Virginia; two great granddaughters; Olivia Grace Keene of San Antonio, Texas and Emery Kate Link of San Antonio, Texas; three step-great granddaughters; Martha Kendall MacMane, Lillian Millay MacMane, and Merrilee Anne MacMane, all of Houston, Texas; special daughter, Stacy Ruth Lamb of Cary, North Carolina; and numerous friends in Monroe. She never met someone without making a new friend.
The family expresses gratitude to Always Best Care, Elara Caring Hospice, and a helpful friend, William Caverlee.
