Martha Chloe Humphreys Linton passed away in Monroe on Thursday, January 21, 2021,
her 91st birthday, following a lengthy illness. Martha was born on January 21, 1930 in
Bogata, Texas to William Verner Humphreys and Chloe Jones Humphreys. She was the
youngest of six children. She graduated from Bogata High School and attended
Paris Junior College and NLU (now ULM). Martha was formerly married to Gordon Jarrett
Snively, and together they had two children, Tesa Snively Turner and Mitchell Glenn
Snively. In 1970, Martha married Ralph Ewing Linton.
Martha, a resident of Monroe since 1957, was a lifelong member of the Church of
Christ and a founding member of Forsythe Avenue Church of Christ. She was also a
member of the AK Chapter of PEO.
She had a strong work ethic and long career. Most significant to her were her years as a
legal secretary at Shotwell, Brown and Sperry and as an administrative assistant to the
Executive Vice President at NLU. She took great pride in her time there, especially
serving as a mentor to student employees.
In addition, she was a gifted artist who loved music and took great pride in designing and
tailoring clothes for her daughter and herself. She was an excellent cook and well known
for her delicious pound cakes.
Martha was petite in stature, pretty as a picture, feisty by nature with a keen, creative
mind and a distinctive sense of style. She possessed great strength, tenacity and talent.
She met life’s many challenges with courage and a strong will. She was a person of faith,
dignity and integrity. Her primary concern was caring for her son who was born with
Down’s Syndrome.
Martha’s long life was an example of unwavering faith and devotion to her family and friends. She was blessed with many loyal friends of all ages. They brought her great joy and support.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved son, Mitchell Glenn Snively, her
husband, Ralph Ewing Linton, her children’s father, Gordon Jarrett Snively and five siblings,
Irene Humphreys Leftwich, Maxine Humphreys Dozier, William Wayne Humphreys, William
Verner Humphreys, Jr. and Edwin Glenn Humphreys. She is survived by her daughter, Tesa
Snively Turner and son-in-law Malcolm Cooper Turner, as well as numerous nieces and
nephews.
