She attended graduate school at LSU Medical School in New Orleans and became a Registered Microbiologist. She and her family lived in West Monroe, LA from 1963 until 2004. She was cited several times as the Volunteer of the Year at the West Monroe Community Center, where she served as a tutor to adults seeking to further their educations. She volunteered in the Emergency Room at Glenwood Regional Medical Center. She was the first woman to be appointed to serve on the Board of Commissioners for Hospital Service District #1, and was the first woman recipient of the A. O. Evan Award for community service.

She and her husband retired to Hoover, Alabama, where she was commissioned to begin an outreach program for the Hoover Public Library, leading book discussion groups for residents of assisted living facilities and nursing homes. She continued to volunteer at the library. At age 83 she published a biography of Colorado’s first school teacher that was well received by leading Colorado historians.

She is preceded in death by her son, James Adams Truly, Jr.; her parents, Rev. Charles E. McLean and Frances Lucille Bowdon McLean; siblings, Charles R. McLean, F.E.
