A memorial service for Malcolm E. DeCelle, Jr. of Monroe will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 2020 at First United Methodist Church, Monroe with Reverend Brian Mercer officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in the Northeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Rayville, LA. .
Malcolm was born in Monroe on February 7, 1944. He graduated from Neville High School and Northeast Louisiana State College (ULM), where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and served as Treasurer. While working for Turner & Albritton CPA’s, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. He continued working for a CPA firm in Baton Rouge while he was a law student at LSU. He and Sandy Heller married in Monroe at First United Methodist Church between school semesters. He earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1970 and was commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army. Malcolm attended Signal Schools at Fort Gordon, Georgia and Fort Sill, Oklahoma before being assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. From there he was assigned to service in Vietnam, where he served in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps from 1971-1972. After honorable discharge as Captain, Malcolm was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces. He returned to Monroe where he practiced law for fifty years. He began a general practice and after a number of years, he also began work for the Indigent Defender Board and was head of the misdemeanor section. Malcolm was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Fourth Judicial District Bar Association, the Louisiana State Bar Association, and the Louisiana Public Defenders Association.
Malcolm gained great satisfaction from his work, but in his leisure time enjoyed watching LSU ball games, the New Orleans Saints, and spending time with grandchildren.
Malcolm, surrounded by family, went peacefully to be with the Lord on July 22, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Malcolm Sr. and Anita Hays DeCelle, and his sister, Carol Ann Meek.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Sandy; son, Denny; and his daughter, AnnMarie; daughter and son-in-law, Leah and Kevin Sumrall; and their children, Katie, Davis, Gabby, and Alex. He is also survived by sister, Donna Harrell; brother, Chuck DeCelle; and sister-in-law, Becky George; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 3900 Loop Road, Monroe, Louisiana 71201, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the charity of your choice.
