Our precious mother, Lillian Jeanette Owens Cook, age 87, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 29, 2024, at 11:50 PM at St. Francis Medical Center, following a short illness.
Graveside services will be Thursday, April 4th at 2:00 PM at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery in Monroe, LA, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA. Dr. Jack Woods Watson will be officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM til 1:00 PM in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, LA.
“Nette,” as she is known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was born on September 27, 1936, in Monroe, LA. She was a member of the first senior class of West Monroe High School, graduating in May 1954; she was also honored to be the first Football Queen of WMHS. Jeanette received her teaching degree from Northeast Louisiana University, graduating on January 24, 1977, with a major in Vocational Home Economics and a minor in Social Studies. She taught both home economics and social studies at WMHS for over 20 years. After retiring in 2002, she continued to substitute teach at WMHS and was also very involved in various activities at the West Ouachita Senior Center. Jeanette was a member of the Celebrations Life Group at First Baptist Church in West Monroe and taught the life group for a number of those years. She loved to dance and was a member of several senior dance groups in the area. All of this was taken from her suddenly when she suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm on December 25, 2014. Jeanette spent the next nine years at Landmark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she never complained about her circumstances and always told everyone that she was a miracle and glad to be alive. She was an inspiration to anyone who knew her and was the Light of Landmark!
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Lester Owens and Ruby Alta Jackson Ellis; brother, Leon Kay Owens; grandsons, Aaron Thomas Harper and Evan Gabriel Carter; brother-in-law, Thomas Gale Gaumnitz, Sr.; and nephews, Thomas Gale Gaumnitz, Jr. and Donald Gene Owens. She was also preceded in death by her children’s father, Thomas Rayburn Cook.
Jeanette is survived by her sister, Carolyn Elaine Owens Gaumnitz; two daughters, Celeste Carolyn Cook Drost and husband Joe, and Kristi Alise Cook Carter and husband Tracy; six grandchildren, Christopher Jeston Harper and wife Mackenzie, Alise Yvonne Carter Ward and husband Jonathon, Emily Celeste Harper Grassi and husband Joseph, Cole Jefferson Carter, Jackson Spencer Carter, and Adam Thomas Harper; three great-grandchildren, Joseph Ray Grassi, Eowyn Jeanette Harper, and Baby Jett Grassi (due in July). She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, step grandchildren, and step great-grandchildren.
We would like to thank Landmark Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for taking such good care of Mom. We would especially like to thank Keisha Jones, Mom’s favorite CNA. Thank you, Keisha, for watching over and loving our mother for all these years; you bring joy to so many who are in a difficult situation.
Though we are sad to be left here on this earth without her, we rejoice knowing that our beautiful Nette is healed and whole and in the presence of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Because of His death and resurrection, we are certain that we will join her one day!
