For all who knew Leolene Langford Fox-Morton, known as “Jibby,” she was a force to be reckoned with. On July 4, 2018, with the sound of fireworks in the distance, she peacefully passed from this earth at age 91.
Jibby was born in Opelousas, LA, on April 21, 1927, to James Nathaniel Langford and Nanelle Coney Langford. Her distinct Georgia drawl came from her mother and stayed with her all of her life. She had a contagious spirit, a memorable wit, and an immovable faith.
Organized and always with a plan, Jibby had a love of life, community, and family that was illustrated throughout her years. Growing up she was an athlete who played basketball, swam and was an avid tennis player. She was a graduate of Louisiana State University, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, elected to the Mortar Board, an LSU cheerleader and named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Always a cheerleader at heart, she loved to dance and cheer with her great-granddaughter, Payton, and great-nieces.
In 1948, she married her college sweetheart Larry H. Fox. They settled in Monroe, LA, and had two sons, John S. Fox and James L. Fox. Jibby was always active in the community, having been a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she was an Elder and a Deacon, a member of the Monroe Junior Charity League, the Ouachita Women’s Republican Club, the Friends of the Cabildo, the English Speaking Union of Monroe, the LSU Alumni Chapter, as well as several other charities and benefactor groups.
Jibby had a keen interest in the political scene and was proud of her heritage. She was active in the Republican Party, serving as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1972 and on the Republican State Central Committee. She also served on Governor Dave Treen’s Cabinet as Secretary of Culture, Recreation, and Tourism. She was a member of both the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames.
Blessed to have found love twice in her life, after the passing of her first husband, Jibby married Howard Wilbanks Morton in 1995. They enjoyed a good life together of traveling and enjoying family until his passing in December of 2008.
To those of us in her family and to all who knew her, she was a joy and an inspiration. Her life was a testament of her faith. She will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her sons, John S. Fox (wife Charlotte) of Lafayette, LA, and James L. Fox; grandson, Sean Fox (wife Tina); and great-granddaughter, Payton Fox of Monroe, LA; her sister, Margaret Langford McKerley of Zachary, LA; step-daughters, Christy Stone (husband Jimmy) and Lucille Hinkle Smith (husband Art); step-grandsons, Jay Walter Stone and Dr. Hill Hinkle (wife Aimee), whose three precious children Jibby adored; and step-granddaughter, Selby Mott.
She was welcomed into to the loving arms of our heavenly Father by husband, Lawrence H. Fox; and his parents, John S. and Irene Sims Fox; by her parents, Mr.& Mrs. J.N. Langford; sister, Nan Langford Mitchell; and husband, Howard W. Morton.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to SOS-Ouachita Humane Society to help them in their efforts to build a new animal shelter, River Cities Animal Shelter for Cats, Covenant Presbyterian Church, the ULM Alumni Federation, the LSU Alumni Federation, or a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank those who were with Jibby and the family on this long journey home including Polly Taylor; Marsha Jordan, Beverly Wilson and the staff at Americare; the wonderful angels at Serenity Home Health; Mary Green; Primecare Home Health, especially Connie Ziegler, Mike Tucker and Charles Gipson; the staff at Glenwood and Allegiance Health; Dr. Frank Weinholt; Dr. Charles Morgan; Terrie Little; and Francesca Lambert. All we can say is we love you, we thank you, and may God bless you. And thanks be to God for a life well lived.
