LELA MAE WOODWARD POINDEXTER BRUNSON
Mulhearn Funeral Home
Sterlington Road, Monroe, LA
Lela Mae Brunson, age 94, earned her Angel wings on Wednesday, February 18, 2009.
Lela was born in Brookhaven, Mississippi on June 2, 1914, and was one of nine children born to Elmer & Lila Ferguson Woodward. Lela resided most of her life in Mangham, LA, but lived the last 25 years at McKeen Plaza in Monroe. She was a member of Faith Tabernacle Church in Monroe. Her passions were the Lord Jesus Christ, and her children and grandchildren. She also enjoyed fishing, sewing, and quilting.
Lela was a wonderful, loving, Christian mother & “Big Mama”, who had two goals in life – to see her children grown with children of their own, and to go to Heaven. She accomplished both!
Lela was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings; husbands, Jim Poindexter, Sr., & Thomas Brunson; son, Jim “Joe” Poindexter, Jr.; sons-in-law, Jule Gilley, Jr., John Wayne Graham, and Karl Buelow; and grandson, Wayne Poindexter. There is no doubt that our Big Mama is walking the streets of gold surrounded by her loved ones.
Lela was a perfect example of what a mother should be; she loved all of her children unconditionally! She is survived by daughter Bobbye Buelow of Monroe; daughter Gay Driscoll and husband Dick of Biloxi, MS; son Tommy Poindexter and wife Patsy of Mangham; daughter Ida Gilley of Mangham; daughter Lila Walimaa of West Monroe; daughter Ann Kitchens and husband Marvin of West Monroe; daughter Doris Cox and husband Tommy of Mangham; and daughter-in-law Sue Poindexter of Mangham. Lela was “Big Mama” to 18 grandchildren, many of whom have children and grand-children of their own.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, David Ezernack, Sr., Danny Ezernack, Gary Gilley, Kurt Buelow, Jeff Mercer, and Jimmy Poindexter. Honorary pallbearers will be grandson, Steve Poindexter, great-grandsons, and Dr. Ron Morgan.
The family would like to thank Mangham Home Care and Dr. Ron Morgan for the excellent care and compassion our Mama received over the past few years. A special thanks to home-health aides, Gloria and Patricia, and sitter, Ms. Tommie Gregory. We would also like to recognize our sister, Ann, for the care and love she gave to Mama…you were her angel on Earth!
Relatives and friends will be received Friday from 5:00 PM to9:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Saturday, February 21, 2009, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Brother Benny Jones & Brother John Jones officiating and music provided by Brother Benny Jones & Brother Randy & Sister Karen Bardwell. Interment will be in Lynn Cemetery in Archibald, LA.
Memorials may be made to Meals-on-Wheels, St. Vincent DePaul Faith, PO Box 14903, Monroe, LA 71207-4903, or a charity of your choice.
