Larry Peter Chauvin passed away peacefully on April 14, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, integrity, and compassion. Born February 6, 1936, in New Orleans, LA, he was a cherished son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather. His family moved to Schriever, LA, when he was a toddler, and he continued to live in the Schriever/Houma area for 62 years. He and his wife of 43 years, Ida Anding Chauvin, have resided in Ruston, LA, for 18 years.
Larry entered the Louisiana National Guard after graduating from Terrebonne High School. He retired from AT&T (formerly South Central Bell / Bellsouth) after 34 years of service. He also served as a board member of the Lafayette District Telephone Credit Union for 20 years. Together, Larry and Ida owned and operated Your Just Desserts bakery in Houma, LA, for 18 years and Utopia restaurant in Thibodaux, LA, for 5 years.
Larry approached each day with enthusiasm and a tireless work ethic. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he will be remembered for his love of family and friends. He cherished moments spent with his loved ones, most often gathered around the dinner table sharing stories of family history.
In his free time, Larry enjoyed fishing and spending time with friends and family. He had an affinity for woodworking, beautifully restoring and building birdhouses. He was an accomplished chef, having learned to cook in the kitchen with his mother, and his greatest joy was sharing his cooking with all who entered his home.
Along with his wife, he is survived by his children Joanne Chauvin of Lafayette, LA; Vicki Guilbeau (Bryan) of Lafayette, LA; Becky Cade (Chris) of Lafayette, LA; Brooke Mitch (Jason) of Allentown, PA; Amy Chauvin of Lafayette, LA; Caleb Price of Ruston, LA; Marshall Chauvin (Anna) of Copperas Cove, TX; and Kathryn Gaston (Matt) of Choudrant, LA; 14 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He was most proud of all his children for their accomplishments in graduating with college degrees, several with advanced degrees.
Larry is also survived by his sister Sharon Schexnaydre (Eddie) and brother Dudley Chauvin (Barbara Thibodaux).
He was preceded in death by his parents Morris Chauvin, Sr., and Glaze Dufrene Chauvin; brothers Leonard Chauvin, Jerrell Chauvin, Morris Chauvin, Jr., Felix Chauvin, and Charles Chauvin; sisters Mary Chauvin and Elaine Hebert; and daughter Rosalyn Chauvin.
Though Larry is no longer with us in body, his great mind and insatiable curiosity will always be remembered. Two qualities he would have liked to be remembered for were being a man of his word and his belief in never saying “I can’t.” May we honor his legacy by continuing to spread kindness, compassion, and love in our own lives, just as he did in his.
Visitation will be held at Alabama Presbyterian Church in Sibley, LA, on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 10 am, services following at 11 am.
