Katie Joyce Culp Barker was born October 27, 1938 in Chatham, LA to the union of Irene Tippen Culp and Thomas Carroll Culp. Katie was the 5th of 11 children; 6 boys and 5 girls.
They moved to West Monroe, LA when she was in the 3rd grade. She graduated from West Monroe High School in 1956. She went to N.L.U. for 2 years taking secretarial courses.
She married Bobby Barker in 1958. She was blessed with two children Sherrie and Jeff and was very thankful that she could be a stay-at-home mom while her children were in school.
Katie is survived by husband, Bobby Barker; daughter, Sherrie Fair and husband, Nigel and Son, Jeff Barker and wife, Karen; two granddaughters, Shelby Fair and Ashleigh Barker; two sisters, Shirley Boyte and Patsy Hull; two brothers, Walton (Sonny) Culp and Troy Culp.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Irene Culp, brothers, J. L. Culp, Derward Culp, Walter Culp and Gary Culp; and sisters, Eleene Eaves and Helen Parks.
Katie was very active in her church work and was a member of the Forsythe Ave Church of Christ for 42 years before moving her membership to Sterlington Church. She always had a smile and a hug and a flair for making a stranger welcomed. Katie said many many times that she was fortunate to have so many good friends, too numerous to name.
Katie’s highlight was working with the Northeast La War Veterans Home. Katie had a very tender heart for veterans. Every month a birthday party was held for the veterans and they loved it. She got a group of ladies from Sterlington Church of Christ and made their party bigger. At Christmas the ladies bought gifts for the veterans and made their party a big affair.
Even with her own battle with cancer and the pain she experienced, Katie did not forget her veteran friends. She made over 60 lap quilts one year and 40 the next year for Veterans for Christmas. This was in addition to a Christmas party with gifts, a nice lunch and live entertainment included “Elvis” (Todd Martin, Elvis imitator) singing to them. Even though some of the veterans no longer had living relatives, with Katie they had family.
