Kathleen Andrews Hunt

Kathleen Andrews Hunt was born on June 22, 1950 in Creole, Louisiana and departed this world on April 20, 2021 from pancreatic cancer. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, William K. Hunt, daughter, Kristin Marie Hunt (wife Mary McAvoy), son, Ethan Andrews Hunt (wife Erin C. Hunt) and three grandchildren Analise Marie Hunt, Amelia June Hunt, and Andrew James Hunt.

Kathy grew up in Opelousas, LA graduating in 1968 from Opelousas High School. She received a B.A. in Sociology from Louisiana Tech in 1972 and her Masters of Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975.

Kathy was a member of First United Methodist Church in Monroe. She served as Chairman of the Administrative Board and taught Bible School and Confirmation classes.

What you have just read is Kathy’s obituary as written by Kathy. I promised not to change it and I have kept that promise, but there is more to say.

When Kathy began school she discovered her gift. Life at home was chaotic but life at school was orderly and she was good at it. Encouraged by her early success she combined her keen intellect with an unrelenting work ethic. She left high school as “Most Intelligent”, “Most Likely to Succeed” and “Betty Crocker Homemaker” among many other awards.

Kathy entered La Tech on an academic scholarship where she continued her record of academic perfection by graduating summa cum laude. Sixteen years of nothing but A’s. Her time at La Tech was the happiest of her young life. She was president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority, Homecoming Queen, on the State Fair Court, Senior Beauty, a member of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges and inducted into several academic honor societies.

In the fall of 1972 she enrolled in Graduate School at LSU. She and I went on a blind date early in the semester. While not love at first sight, she did not outright reject me. Our affection for one another grew exponentially and on January 24, 1973 we agreed to marry. We were married in my grandparents living room on May 18, 1973.

A year later we were living in Mantua, New Jersey. Kathy enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania and in 1975 completed her Masters of Social Work. The little girl from Opelousas was now an Ivy League graduate.

A few years later Kristin arrived followed in two years by Ethan. Kathy was as intentional in child rearing as she was in academics. A major component of her home making was to lead her family back to church. Under her guidance we all four became very active members of First United Methodist Church in Monroe. Kathy served as Chair of the Administrative Board, Chair of Missions, Chair of Stewardship. She was a nursery volunteer, children’s and youth Sunday School teacher, taught Vacation Bible School for 40 years, taught Confirmation Classes, carved pumpkins, worked in the children’s after school program, and most of all was a member of our beloved Friendship Class for 43 years.

Outside of church she served on the Girl Scouts Board, Big Sister’s Mentor, PTO President, Chair of Habitat for Humanity Family Nurture Committee, was involved in Christian Community Ministries from its inception and prepared meals for the DeSiard Street Shelter. She loved being a member of the Monroe Garden Club and Jeanie Roberts Tap Dancing Class. She was a member of the same Christian Covenant Group for 30 years. Her favorite hobbies were cooking, reading and gardening. Her favorite places to be were home, church and the library. She absolutely loved being a grandmother. I don’t think anything gave her more joy in life than her grandchildren. She was an absolute magician with children. She taught her children and her children’s children to cook. She would teach your children to cook if she had the chance. She loved the trips we took together. She loved the trips we took with the Friendship Class. Most of all she loved the trips we took with the grandchildren.

Kathy Hunt was the most loving, generous person I have ever known. She lived life with love in her heart and a smile on her face all the way until the absolute end.

There will be a memorial service at First United Methodist Church in Monroe, LA on May 8, 2021 at 11:00am. Visitation will be from 9:00am until service time. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Friendship Class and Kathy’s Covenant Group.
