Juanita W. Ellerbe

June 26, 1929 — December 31, 2020

Mrs. Juanita Wilhite Ellerbe, of Monroe, Louisiana, was born June 26, 1929 and passed away on December 31, 2020 at the age of 91 due to complications of COVID-19.

Before retiring, Nita was a secretary at Wossman High School and then an Administrative Assistant in the Athletic Department at ULM. After retirement, many of her former students, athletes, and coaches kept in contact with her and she never hesitated to “keep them in line”. Her grandchildren describe her as a firecracker, a caretaker, and a nurturer and say she could be counted on when no one else could. Nita was happiest in her kitchen and always had enough for an extra Sunday lunch plate if any grandkids’ friends or other guests joined the meal. She had an unconditional love of animals, especially dogs, and it was not uncommon for them to be treated as equals to the kids around the house. Her consistent refrain during this long pandemic was for us to “love each other and take care of each other.”

She was preceded in death by her husband, Julian Ray Ellerbe, and their son, Roderick Michael Ellerbe.

Her survivors include her daughter, Nita Rae Womack (Jimmy), daughter-in-law, Elain Ellerbe, daughter, Peggy Smith (Ricky), son, Brad Ellerbe (Marsha), daughter, Jenny Ellerbe (Anna), grandson Phil Frank (daughter, Peyton), grandson Chris McGough (wife, Claire, and daughter, Ana), granddaughter Mandy Womack, granddaughter Jana Blaylock (husband, Brandon, and son, Mason), granddaughter Ari Mathe (husband, Chet, and children, Abigail and Michael Joseph), and granddaughter Megan Hodge (husband, Casey, and children Kannon and Landrie.) Other surviving immediate family members are her brothers, Robert Lane Wilhite (Mary) and Billy Floyd Wilhite.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Elizabeth Williams at St. Joseph’s Nursing Home as well as the staff for their kindness and compassion to Nita these past few years.

A private burial will take place at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery with a celebration of her life to follow when it is safe to do so.

Memorials may be made to the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home in Monroe or the Ouachita Parish Animal Shelter.
