Josephine Johns Traweek

February 12, 1930 — November 13, 2020

Family graveside services for Josephine Johns Traweek,90, of West Monroe, will be held at Gwin Memorial Cemetery in Mangham, LA, on Thursday, November 19 at 10:00 AM with Reverend Warren Eckhardt officiating under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home of West Monroe, LA.

Jo Traweek was an outstanding teacher, a reading specialist, for 31 years at Claiborne Elementary School in West Monroe, and an active member in both OAE and LAE. She loved teaching, as well as helping student teachers begin their own careers in education. In addition, she enjoyed her involvement, at both the local and state level, with her chapter of ADK, an honorary organization for women educators. Her church home was McGuire United Methodist Church in West Monroe where she was involved at all levels from being on various committees to teaching Sunday School and VBS; she especially loved her United Methodist Women’s group and participating in their education and community outreach projects.

Jo was born on February 12, 1930 and died on November 13, 2020. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buford Traweek; her mother, Viola Johns; and her brother, Willie Johns. She is survived by two daughters, Linda Traweek and Jackie Lowery (and her husband Bobby) and a son, John B. Traweek of Madison, AL. She has four grandchildren: Keith Lowery (Tanya) and Brian Lowery of Monroe; Dawn Brazzel (Brad) of Oxford, MS; and Craig Lowery (Kristi) of Sterlington. Her extended family includes several great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family would like to thank the dedicated and caring staff, especially Connie Culpepper and Kate Wiley, at Stoney Brook Memory Care in West Monroe. In lieu of memorials -- take a child to the library to check out books, buy a child a book you enjoyed when you were a child, or read together with a child you love. Jo was a tireless advocate for reading instruction, and she “loved books, those undemanding but faithful friends.”
