Funeral services for John Samuel Nienhuis, 88, of Monroe, will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, April 7, 2018, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe, with Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Friday, at Mulhearn Funeral Home.
Mr. Nienhuis was born January 2, 1930, in Cadillac, MI, and passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at his residence after a brief illness. He graduated from Tri-State College in Terre Haute, IN, and was a United States Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Nienhuis retired from IMC/Dow in Sterlington as a chemical engineer. He was a member of North Monroe Baptist Church where he served as Sunday School Director and greeter for many years. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a man of great faith.
Mr. Nienhuis was preceded in death by his parents, Dirk William and Lora Eva Bridgeman Nienhuis.
Survivors include his wife, Gail Simmons Nienhuis; children, Penni and Keith Cromwell, Pam Mulligan, Debbie and John Barton, and Laura and Randy Shepard; grandchildren, Heather and Brandon Thompson, Kristin Cromwell, Jordan Cromwell, Zachary Cromwell, Sara and Chris Miller, Heidi and Bien Budai, Kim and Tim Butterfield, Amanda Zinc, Allison Hoesman Kimberlin, Audra and Adam Vogel, and Amy Hoesman; 20 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild; sisters, Doris Kinney, Pauline Newmarch, and Dorothy Maxwell; brother, Bill Nienhuis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family.
Pallbearers will be Steve King, Brandon Thompson, Charlie Adams, Paul Vaughn, Roy Andrews, and Frank Swayze. Honorary pallbearers will be the Adult 7 Life Group.
Memorials may be made to North Monroe Baptist Church Building Fund.
