John Rowan (Smitty) Smith, III

Funeral services for Mr. John R. Smith III, 76, of West Monroe, will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, January 18, 2019, in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Monroe, with Rev. Warren Eckhardt officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born February 4, 1942, in West Monroe, LA, and passed away Saturday, January 12, 2019, at St. Francis Medical Center. Smitty grew up in the New Orleans area and was a graduate of Alcee Fortier High School. He was an Army Reserve Combat Medic. Later he completed mortgage banking school in 1972 He worked for Carruth Mortgage in New Orleans before moving his family to Monroe, LA in 1978. While in Monroe, he worked for Audubon Insurance as a field representative and Getty Insurance. In 1991, he opened Winchester General Agency.

Smitty was a loving husband and father to his three boys. Of the many awards he received throughout his life, he was most proud of his family and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John R. Smith and Myrtle Smith; and sisters, Sandra Smith and Dee Smith.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Julie Pearson Smith; sons, John R. Smith IV and wife Kathy of Bossier City, LA, Bernard J. Smith and wife Katie of Monroe, and Brad J. Smith and wife Laurie of Monroe; 7 grandchildren, Timothy J. (TJ) Smith and wife Ashley, Chase Smith, Chandler Smith, Conner Smith, Madison Smith, Bradley Smith, and Cooper Smith; one brother, Ennis (Sonny) Trimble and wife Myrt; and one sister, Jackie Smith.

Pallbearers will be Dale Jones, Darren Ford, Don Ziegler, Steve Peyton, Steve Traxler, and J. P. Christensen. Grandsons and granddaughters will be honorary pallbearers.
