December 13, 1921 — December 27, 2012

Funeral services for John McCarthy “Mac” Ward will be held at 2:00 p.m. on January 2, 2013, at St. Matthew Catholic Church with Father Richard Norsworthy and Father Joseph Puthuppally officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.

John McCarthy Ward, 91, was born to Mabel McCarthy Ward and Zeb Ward on December 13, 1921 in Little Rock, Arkansas. At an early age, his family moved to New Orleans where he graduated from Fortier High School and Northeast Louisiana State Junior College (now ULM). Mac Ward was the premier veteran newscaster in the Monroe area from 1952 to the late 1960s. Many viewers planned their days around his television news casts, with his perceptive analysis of local, state, and world events. His interviews were legendary of both local and prominent individuals.

He was preceded in death by his loving and loyal wife of 46 years, Sue Dickard Ward. Sue was a descendant of many early Monroe families. Also, his parents, brother, Zeb Ward, and sister, Elizabeth Ward.

He is survived by his dear cousin, Sibley Logan Ward, III, and his wife, Sue, of Coronado, CA; and his wife’s nieces and nephews.

Mac was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Catholic Church. Under his guidance, many of the renovations of St. Matthew were achieved, including the painting of the ceiling by John Kennedy. His pride in his church was evident to all who knew him. Historic preservation was another important part of his life.

One of the outstanding memories Mac had as a Veteran of World War II was taking part in the “D” Day landing on Normandy Beach on June 1944. Mac served in intelligence campaigns in Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.

The family appreciates the love and kindness shown by his family, friends, physicians and caregivers from Senior Care Services and Family Hospice Alliance.

Pallbearers are Sibley Logan Ward, III, Fred Huenefeld, Jr., Herschel A. Gentry, Jr., Chet Harrod, Frederick Huenefeld, III, Marc Bloch, Ben Tarver, Earl Casey, Don Smith, Shannon Slack, and Billy Bradley.

Visitation will be held at St. Matthew Church from noon until services at St. Matthew Catholic Church.
