Funeral services for John Mathis Minninger, 93, of Monroe, will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church with Rev. David Richter and Rev. Matthew Long officiating. Interment will follow at Mulhearn Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe.
Mr. Minninger died Sunday, July 20, 2014, at his residence. A Navy Veteran of WWII who landed on Omaha beach on D-Day, he was honored and proud to serve his country. He was a charter member of Jesus the Good Shepherd Catholic Church and served his church as an usher for many years. Mr. Minninger loved working in his yard and much to the chagrin of his kids; he loved including them in the work as well. In later years he loved spending time with his wife watching and feeding the birds and squirrels with a glass of wine which he attributed to his longevity and good health.
Throughout his life he was an avid hunter, fisherman, bowler, tennis player, baseball and softball player, and golfer who shot his age on occasion and was finally convinced to move up to the senior tees at the age of 78. He coached his sons in Little League and it could be safely said that he never missed a sporting event of his children’s. He is now playing golf everyday on glorious greens and is reunited with the love of his life, his precious Mary Lee.
Mr. Minninger was preceded in death by parents, Peter and Margaret Minninger; wife of 61 years, Mary Lee Martin Minninger; son-in-law, Tommy Miller; and brother, Leo Minninger.
Survivors include his daughter, Linda Miller of Huttig, AR; sons, Pete Minninger of Monroe, LA, David Minninger and wife Anne of Monroe, LA, Richard Minninger and wife Cheryl of Grayson, LA, Brad Minninger of West Monroe, LA; sister, Viola Hughes of Estacada, OR; six grandchildren, Ashley Mathews and husband Chris, Matt and Bershen Minninger, Stuart, Zach, and Spencer Baum; and one great grandson, Reid Mathews.
Pallbearers will be Joe Reljac, Tommy Grigson, Ed Regan, Dennis LaSuzzo, Donnie Lively, and Stephen Haydel.
Visitation will be 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the funeral home.
