Funeral services for John Heath “Pappy” Allen, Jr., 92, of Monroe, will be held at 4:00 PM Thursday, February 23, 2012, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Burgess officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul’s Church Columbarium under the direction of Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. Mr. Allen died Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at St Francis Specialty Hospital. John was born July 28, 1919 in Reynolds, Ga., the son of Rev. John Heath Allen and Willie Lee Kirk Allen. John served in the army during World War II. A longtime life insurance salesman, John began his career in radio and served as the voice of Northeast Louisiana University football Indians during the mid-70s. John and Helen were founding members of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and he sang in the church’s Chancel Choir for over 50 years. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his daughter, Sharon Allen Taylor. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Helen Fernandez Allen; his son, John Heath Allen III and wife Jan; and daughter, Arden Allen Dufilho and her husband Edward. He also leaves nine grandchildren, Tanya Taylor Pesek, James Robert “Jay” Taylor Jr., Jennifer Allen Etzel, John Heath Allen IV, William Donald “Billy” Allen, Alden Anne Allen, Halle Anna Allen, Claire Lea Allen and Carrie Beth Allen and five great-grand children. Honorary pallbearers are John Allen, Billy Allen, Edward Dufilho, Jay Taylor, Jim Taylor, Mark Pesek, Erik Etzel, and Billy Edmondson. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Mulhearn Funeral Home, Sterlington Road, Monroe. The family wishes to express a Special Thank You to his caregiver, Patricia Bynum.
